COLUMBUS, O. — The Los Angeles Kings on paper would appear to be one of the best teams in the National Hockey League.

At times they seem unbeatable. Other times they play inconsistent hockey, can’t string together two victories.

Just when people count them out as done for a season, the Kings emerge into the playoffs and a serious Stanley Cup contender. Proof, they have won two of the last three Cups.

Tuesday night, the Blue Jackets learned that the Kings came to play and would not be denied a win.

LA’s top line of Dwight King, Jeff Carter and Tyler Toffoli all scored goals en route to a 4-3 win before a crowd of 14,703 at Nationwide Arena. That line shot the puck a total of 10 times.

The Blue Jackets led briefly 1-0 on a goal by Jack Skille at 1:40 of the first period.

But the Kings had an answer everytime the Jackets got close on the scoreboard.

One bright spot in the game for Columbus was LW Scott Hartnell played in his 1,000th career NHL game. Only 27 current active players and 297 overall have ever achieved this honor in the game’s history. It was only fitting that Hartnell scored a goal in the contest.

Also scoring in the game were LA’s Dustin Brown and the CBJ’s David Savard.

“Mr. Hockey” Gordie Howe suffers stroke

Hall of Fame Hockey player Gordie Howe is resting after suffering a stroke on Sunday in Lubbock, Texas.

The news was reported by his daughter, Cathy, who he was visiting at the time.

The stroke has left the 86-year-old Howe with some lost function on the right side of his body, involving his arm and leg. His speech is slurred but can recognize and identify people he is familiar with.

Howe, who in a 26-year NHL career, was a 23-time All-Star playing in 1,767 games, scoring 801 goals, dishing out 1,049 assists and netting 1,850 points. He led the Detroit Red Wings to four Stanley Cups. Howe also played for the Hartford Whalers before retiring in 1980.

At the time of his retirement, Howe was the NHL leader in career goals and points before Wayne Gretzky broke those records during his career.

Pittsburgh Penguins stay busy, naming Jim Rutherford as new GM

The Pittsburgh Penguins fired head coach Dan Bylsma and hired a new GM, Jim Rutherford all in the same day.

The 65-year-old Rutherford resigned the same position back in April with the Carolina Hurricanes. He replaces Ray Shero, who was fired three weeks ago.

Rutherford is a former 5’8, 160-pound goalie in the NHL from 1969-1983 with Detroit, Toronto and the LA Kings.

This is a homecoming for him with Pittsburgh, as he played goaltender for the team in the 1970′s.

After his playing career, he spent 20 years with the Hartford Whalers franchise, who moved to North Carolina in 1997 and became the Carolina Hurricanes. Carolina won the Stanley Cup in 2006.

As expected, Pittsburgh Penguins fire Dan Bylsma

Dan Bylsma is a good NHL coach. He’s a Stanley Cup winning coach with 252 career wins.

But in the end, those facts did not allow him to keep his job with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It was rumored by several members of the Pittsburgh media during the recent playoff series with the Columbus Blue Jackets that Bylsma could or would lose his job. Management did not like the fact that the Blue Jackets caused all kind of havoc to make the Penguins scuffle to win the series in six games. The the loss to the Rangers in the next series after having a commanding lead left a bad taste in the mouth.

The 252 games won with the Penguins is a franchise record.

But the fact that he could not win another Stanley Cup with players like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, James Neal and Brooks Orpik was unacceptable to management.

Since winning the Stanley Cup in 2009, Pittsburgh lost series to lower-seeded teams and ended up with 4-5 playoff series record.

The past few months have been difficult for the 43-year-old Bylsma. He coached Team USA in the Sochi Olympics back in February would could not win a medal.
