Serena Williams won her first tournament since returning to tennis, beating Marion Bartoli 7-5, 6-1 in the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California.

Williams missed almost a year due to blood clots in her lungs and two foot operations. It was her first title since winning Wimbledon in 2010.

Williams overcame two breaks in the first set to beat the ninth-ranked Bartoli, who eliminated Williams in straight sets in the fourth round at Wimbledon this year.

The Cleveland Indians have purchased the contract of infielder Cord Phelps from AAA Columbus.

To make room for Phelps on the 25-man roster, the Indians have demoted infielder/outfielder Shelley Duncan to AAA Columbus.

To get Phelps on the 40-man roster, the Indians have transferred right-handed pitcher Alex White, who is out of action with right middle finger soreness, from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day list.

The 24-year-old Phelps, a switch-hitter, has spent the entire 2011 season with the Columbus Clippers. A spring training invitee to the Major League camp, he was re-assigned to Minor League camp on March 25. To this date, he has hit .299 (63-211) with 31 runs scored, 15 doubles, 2 triples, 7 homers and 40 RBI’s in 55 games. Phelps is very versatile, appearing in 28 games at shortstop, 12 at second base and 1 at third base.

The Stanford, California native was selected in the 3rd round, 107th overall pick by Cleveland in the 2008 June Draft following his junior season at Stanford University.

Duncan has appeared in 29 games with the Indians, batting .222 with 5 runs scored, 6 doubles, 2 home runs and 17 RBI’s.
