Sporting Kansas City forward C. J. Sapong, a James Madison University product, has been voted the MLS Rookie of the Year.
The 6’1, 22-year-old rising star, received 42 percent of the votes from the media, 30 percent from fellow players from around the league and 34 percent from Major League Soccer clubs.
Sapong scored five goals and logged five assists.
Sapong held off D.C. United defender Perry Kitchen, who was second with 34.6 percent of the votes and third-place finisher, Michael Farfan, a midfielder for Philadelphia.

The Houston Dynamo have advanced out of the Eastern Conference to the MLS Cup championship game.
Andre Hainault and Carlo Costly scored goals in the second half to lead the Dynamo to a 2-0 win over Sporting Kansas City in the East final.
Houston advances to the title game on November 20 at Carson, California, where no team has beaten their next opponent, the Los Angeles Galaxy all year.
The Columbus Crew took a trip to the Philadelphia suburb of Chester, Pennsylvania, and came back empty-handed. No goals, no points, nothing!
The Union scored on a first half breakaway goal and never caught steam in losing 1-0.
Sebastien Le Toux scored the game’s lone goal in the 32nd minute to give Philadelphia their first win in 9 games.
The Crew drops to 11-10-8, 41 points on the season. They are very fortunate to still be in first place in the East as second-place Sporting Kansas City lost to Real Salt Lake.
The Crew returns home this Saturday to host Major League Soccer’s best team, the Los Angeles Galaxy.
