The Cincinnati Reds have announced that they’ve hired former major league manager Jim Riggleman to lead their new Double-A affiliate in Pensacola.

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos will play in the Southern League.

The new job will be Riggleman’s first in the dugout since his stunning decision to abruptly resign last June as the manager of the Washington Nationals over his contract situation when the team was in a hot streak, winning 11 of 12 games.

After leaving Washington, Riggleman worked as a scout for the San Francisco Giants.

Riggleman and Reds general manager Walt Jocketty have worked together before. Riggleman was the St. Louis Cardinals Minor League field coordinator while Jocketty was the team’s GM.

Riggleman, who is 59, has also managed the Padres, Cubs and Mariners.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have high expectations of the talents that Adam Eaton possesses that he has been selected along with four other players to play in the prestigious Arizona Fall League. He’ll be heading out this weekend to play for the Salt River Rafters in Scottsdale.

Eaton, a 2007 graduate of Springfield Kenton Ridge High School, started the 2011 season with the Single-A Visalia Rawhide and in June was promoted to the Mobile BayBears. He hit .302, the third-best average on the team, had an on-base percentage of .409 in 56 games. He hit four home runs, stole 10 bases and knocked home 28 runs.

Adam’s second minor league season ended with a championship as the Double-A BayBears last Sunday clinched the Southern League title with a 6-4 win over the Tennessee Smokies.

The International League selected Durham outfielder Brandon Guyer as their Batter of the Week for the period from June 13-19.

Guyer is the fourth member of the Bulls to win an IL weekly award this season (Alexander Torres, April 11-17; Justin Ruggiano, May 2-8; Felipe Lopez, May 16-22.

Guyer didn’t dominate any one category during the week, but he had very solid numbers in all stat categories to help the Bulls stay in the lead in the IL South Division.

In six games during the week, Guyer hit .409 with a double, triple and home run, 7 RBI’s (3rd in IL), six runs scored (Tied-1st), and a pair of stolen bases (Tied-2nd).

Guyer produced two three-hit games during the week, including a 3-for-5, 4-RBI, 3-run effort at Gwinnett.

Guyer has been one of the League’s best hitters this season, with the proof being his .323 average (5th in the IL), .540 slugging percentage (4th), and 47 runs scored (Tied-4th).

Guyer, 25, was the Chicago Cubs Minor League Player of the Year in 2010 with Double-A Tennessee. The Southern League All-Star was traded to Tampa Bay in the offseason as part of the trade involving Matt Garza.

Guyer is a native of West Chester, Pennsylvania.
