Jimmie Johnson broke loose on a restart three laps from the ending of the Southern 500 and held over the weekend to give Hendrick Motorsports its 200th Sprint Cup win.

Johnson, whom you can never count out of a race, seemed like he would come up short on low fuel and worn tires and with Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch right on his heels and he was chasing Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman spun out with six laps left to go at Darlington Raceway.

Once the green flag was dropped, Johnson took off from Stewart and cruised to his first win since Kansas last October, breaking a 16-race winless drought for the five-time NASCAR champion and the Rick Hendrick racing team.

It was Johnson’s third win at the South Carolina track, but the first since he swept the 2004 events, the last season Darlington had two cup races.

Denny Hamlin finished second, followed by Stewart, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex, Jr.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. finished 17 and his Sprint Cup winless streak goes to 140 laps.

Regan Smith took control of the race on a caution nine laps from the end and survived a green-white-checker finish to take home the Southern 500 for his first Sprint Cup victory at Darlington.

Smith held off Carl Edwards the final two laps at Darlington Raceway in a race that went into an overtime finish.

Brad Keselowski finished third, pole-sitter Kasey Kahne was fourth and Ryan Newman fifth.
