5th-seeded Radwanska upsets #2 Sharapova to win Sony Ericsson Open

Agnieszska Radwanska, who is ranked fifth, upset #2 Maria Sharapova 7-5, 6-4, over the weekend to win the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Florida, for the first time ever.

The 23-year-old Radwanska is from Poland and has a record of 306-137 in singles play with 9 WTA titles to her credit.

Radwanska, ranked a career-best fourth in the world, earned her fourth title since last summer.

Sharapova, a three-time Grand Slam champion, is winless in four attempts in the Sony Ericsson finals. The Russian tennis star was also the runner-up in 2005, 2006 and 2011.

Wozniacki victorious in Sony Ericsson Open

Top-ranked tennis star Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark beat fourth-seeded Lucie Sararova from the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-4 to capture the Sony Ericsson Open for the second straight year.

The tournament takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The 20-year-old Wozniacki has won 74% of her singles matches in her career.

2011 Sony Ericsson Open goes to Djokovic

Novak Djokovic won his fourth straight tournament, beating the number-1 tennis player in the world, Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) in a hard-fought final round at the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Florida.

Djokovic, the number-2 player in the world, hung tough with Nadal throughout the match in sunny, 85-degree temperatures. The match lasted 3 1/2 hours.

Djokovic has now won 26 straight matches since December 2010, and his record of 24-0 in 2011 is the best to begin a season since Ivan Lendl started out at 25-0 in 1986.

Azarenka beats Sharapova in Key Biscayne Final

Victoria Azarenka won the Sony Ericsson Open for the second time by taking down Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-4 in Key Biscayne, Florida.

The Minsk, Belarus native, who is 21,  also won the tournament in 2009.

The tournament’s 8th-seeded player, Azarenka swept nine straight games to take charge of the match.

Sharapova committed 43 unforced errors, held serve only once and came up short with a late comeback bid.

Azarenka, currently the world’s number-6 tennis player, has a record of 219-102.

Clijsters claim 500th win at Sony Ericsson Open

WTA Tour star Kim Clijsters earned her 500th career win by beating Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Florida.

Clijsters, a two-time winner of the tournament in 2005 and 2006, advanced to the fourth round despite not playing well at all with 39 unforced errors.

Clijsters is #2 in the world.
