Hjorth wins Avnet LPGA Classic in Alabama

Marja Hjorth took full advantage of Alexis Thompson’s collapse in a failed attempt to become the youngest LPGA Tour winner, rallying to win the Avnet LPGA Classic in Mobile, Alabama.

Hjorth shot her second straight 5-under-par 67 to finish at 10-under 278, two strokes ahead of Song-Hee Kim (71), for her fifth tour win.

Thompson, who is 16, tied shot a 78 to drop into a tie for 19th at 1-under-par.

Thompson, Kim share lead at Avnet Classic

Alexis Thompson and Song-Hee Kim share the lead after three rounds of the Avnet LPGA Classic.

The 16-year-old Thompson fired a 5-under-par 67 at the Mobile, Alabama tournament.

Thompson, who received a sponsor’s exemption for her first LPGA Tour event of the year, and Kim (70) are at 7-under-par. Amy Yang is one stroke back after a 72.

Sandra Gal, the second-round leader, is three back after shooting a 75.

Gal leads LPGA Classic after two rounds

Sandra Gal, the Florida Gators former golf star, birdied five of the final eight holes for a 5-under 67 and a one stroke lead over Amy Yang in the Avnet LPGA Classic in Mobile, Alabama.

Gal, who is from Germany and won the Kia Classic in March in California for her first LPGA tour title, is at 7-under-par for the tournament.

Yang at 68, Stacy Lewis, the Kraft Nabisco winner three weeks ago, shot a 71, leaving her two strokes back at 5 under along with Karen Stupples (71) and Song-Hee Kim (72).

Park, Kim lead Mobile tournament

The first round of the Avnet LPGA Classic is in the books and it’s tight at the top of the leaderboard in Mobile, Alabama.

Grace Park and Song-Hee Kim both shot 5-under-par 67′s in windy conditions to share the lead after Thursday’s opening round.

Stacy Lewis, the Kraft Nabisco winner three weeks ago, is a stroke backat 68 along with Karen Stupples.

Song-Hee Kim leads Hana Bank Championship tournament

Song-Hee Kim of South Korea birdied four holes in a row on the front nine Saturday and finished he second straight 4-under-par-68 for a one-stroke lead over defending champion Na Yeon Choi in the LPGA Hana Bank Championship in Incheon, South Korea.

Kim, who hasn’t won in 73 LPGA starts, finished second in the LPGA Championship in late June, then lost in a playoff to Choi in the Jamie Farr Classic in Toledo, Ohio, the very next week.

50-year-old Hall of Famer Juli Inkster, is three strokes at 5-under-par-68. Inkster is trying to become the oldest LPGA Tour winner.

Michelle Wie shot a 73 and is 1-under-par.
