Shawne Merriman and his “Lights Out” show closes in San Diego

The San Diego Chargers have cut dies with another of their star players.

Shawne Merriman, the linebacker known as “Lights Out”, and one of the most feared players in the NFL, was placed on the injured reserve list because of a calf injury and a “minor injury designation” on Wednesday. By putting him on that list, San Diego has to release him, once he’s healthy.

The Chargers could resign him, but general manager A.J. Smith has not been a Merriman fan because he seems to be more of an off-the-field celebrity than on-the-field star.

The “Lights Out” nickname stems from Merrriman’s ferocious hits. He had 39 1/2 sacks in his first three seasons. He’s only had four in the three seasons since that time due to a variety of injuries.

Merriman, who has been on the trading block for some time, has five tackles and no sacks in 2010 during limited duty.

Former Kent State star, Antonio Gates gets extension from Chargers

Antonio Gates, one of the best catching tight ends in the NFL, signed the biggest contract on Wednesday ever given to a player at his position.

Gates agreed to a $36.175 million, five-year contract extension with the San Diego Chargers, with $20.4 million guaranteed. The deal averages $7.235 million per season from 2011-2015.

A former college basketball star at Kent State, which has the same colors and lightning bolt emblem as the Chargers, Gates has improved year-after-year from a rookie free agent in 2003 to a superstar that has three All-Pro awards and six Pro Bowls to his list of accomplishments.

The Chargers still have three other players up for extensions, Left tackle Marcus McNeill, Wide receiver Vincent Jackson and Linebacker Shawne Merriman.
