The Ohio State men’s volleyball team won their first national championship with a five-set victory over UC Santa Barbara, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 15-9 in the finals at Penn State University.
Shawn Sangrey, a junior from Columbia, Pennsylvania, had a career-high 30 kills, the last three coming in the final moments of the fifth set. Then, senior setter Steve Kehoe leaped to block UCSB All-American Jeff Menzel’s last shot at keeping the Gauchos alive, and the third-seeded Buckeyes walked off with the title.
Ohio State (26-6) made its 18th trip to the final four and its third appearance in the title game.
Sangrey, was very elated playing on the court where he won two high school state titles.
UCSB advanced to the title game by knocking off #1 USC.

Ohio State beat Penn State in four sets Thursday night in State College, Pennsylvania, to advance to the men’s NCAA volleyball tournament final.
Shawn Sangrey led the Buckeyes with 15 kills, including the cross-court winner to cap the 25-18, 24-26, 25-22 and 25-23 victory.

The Buckeyes will now go up against UC Santa Barbara, which pulled an upset of top-ranked USC 29-27, 24-26,25-15 and 25-18 for the title.
The championship match will be played Saturday night at 7 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN2.
