Olympic gold-medalist Shawn Johnson, who is only 20-years-old, has announced her retirement from comepetitve gymnastics, just days before the start of the U.S. championships.

The 4-foot, 9-inch gymnast felt that it would be a risk to return to the Olympics while her knee was still not 100 percent.

Johnson won four medals in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, a Gold in the balance beam and three Silver’s for the All-around, team and floor events.

She then took two years off and won Dancing with the Stars.

Johnson, who is from Des Moines, Iowa, has had repeated setbacks and disappointments with her left knee, which was injured seriously in a January 2010 skiing accident.
