McIlroy wins playoff over Kim at Shanghai Masters

Rory McIlroy beat Anthony Kim with a par on the first hole of a playoff to win $2 million at the Shanghai Masters in China.

McIlroy holed a 2-foot putt after Kim missed a 3-footer.

The $2 million first prize is the richest in all of golf. The top players, also will be staying in Shanghai for this week’s World Golf Championships/HSBC Champions tournament also received appearance money.

Due to the fact that the event isn’t sanctioned by a major tour, there were no ranking points on the table.

Kim earned $750,000.

McIlroy closed with an even-par 72 to match Kim’s 69 at 18-under-par.

Andy Murray upsets Roger Federer in Shanghai Masters final

Andy Murray took advantage of the errors by Roger Federer to win the Shanghai Masters in China for his second title of the year on Sunday, 6-3, 6-2.

Murray broke Federer’s serve four times while holding off six break points.He had six service aces to only three for the Swiss star. Federer had trouble using his forehand during the match.

Murray, who is from Great Britain, did not drop a set in the tournament and has Federer’s number, having beaten him eight times in 13 meetings, including the last two. Murray’s win on Sunday was the most one-sided match the two have played to date.

Even with the loss, Roger Federer will move up to become the second-ranked player as a result of reaching the final. He was trying to win the 64th title of his career, which would have tied him with Pete Sampras for fourth place on the all-time list.

With the win, Andy Murray became the fourth player to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals in London, joining Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. The World Tour Finals will be played in November.

Roger Federer will add Mandarin to his list of languages

Tennis star Roger Federer will be adding Mandarin to the list of languages that he speaks, which now totals four.

Federer was in China for the Shanghai Masters tournament. He used his off-the-court time taking lessons in Mandarin.

Federer, the third-ranked player in the world, also speaks German, English and French.

The Swiss player is a 16-time Grand Slam winner.

Melzer upsets top-ranked Nadal in Shanghai

Austrian Jurgen Melzer has upset Rafael Nadal in the third round of the Shanghai Masters in China.

The world’s Number 1 tennis player, Nadal lost 6-1, 3-6,6-3. He had never dropped a set to the Austrian in three previous meetings.

Nadal had won the U.S. Open in September to become the seventh man to win all four Grand Slam titles. He was bidding for his eighth title of the 2010 season.
