Vollmer wins United States’ first gold medal at world championships

University of California-Berkeley product Dana Vollmer won the United States’ first gold medal at the swimming world championships in Shanghai.

The 23-year-old won the 100-meter butterfly in 56.87 seconds.

The 6’0, 150-pound swimmer was born in Syracuse, New York, raised in Texas and specializes in the butterfly and freestyle swimming.

Phelps wins 100-meter butterfly race

26-year-old Michael Phelps stole the show as he usually does in the swimming pool, winning the 100-meter butterfly at the Canada Cup in Montreal.

The meet was a tuneup for the World Aquatic Championships beginning July 16 in Shanghai.

Known as “The Baltimore Bullet,” Phelps went wire to wire in 51.52 seconds.

The 6’4 Phelps won his only other event, the 200-meter freestyle.
