Florida Gators surprise college basketball with hiring of Louisiana Tech coach Michael White

Fans of the Florida Gators Men’s Basketball program expected a big-name coach to be hired replacing Billy Donovan, who bolted for the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Florida administration feels that they have hired the right man.

On Thursday, Florida hired an up-and-coming coach in 38-year-old Michael White, from Louisiana Tech.

White received a six-year contract worth $12 million dollars total and $2 million a year.

White, a native of Dunedin, Florida, also has coached at Jacksonville State and Ole Miss as an assistant.

White is an SEC guy. He played from 1995 to 1999 for the Mississippi Rebels. He became a starter in the eighth game of his freshman year and remained a starter for the remainder of his four years at Ole Miss. During White’s college career, he had 370 assists, the 6th highest total in Ole Miss history. He also led his team to two SEC Western Division Titles, three consecutive NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournaments (1997, 1998 and 1999), and the first NCAA Tournament victory in the history of Ole Miss.

At the 100-game mark, he had the highest winning percentage and the most wins of any coach in Louisiana Tech history (101-40 .716). In addition to that the Bulldogs have not lost a home game since December 4, 2013. Currently that is the 4th longest active Division 1 home court win streak.

Ohio State’s men’s basketball team lost in its bid for a transfer to add to the 2012 recruiting class earlier this week.

Mississippi State transfer Rodney Hood choose the Duke Blue Devils over the Buckeyes.

Hood was named to the SEC All-Freshman team last season after finishing the season as the Bulldogs third-leading rebounder at 8.4 and scorer at 10.3.

The 6-foot-8 forward from Meridian, Mississippi, is a friend and former AAU teammate of Ohio State sophomore LaQuinton Ross.

Michael Roth

The South Carolina is tough when it enters the NCAA baseball tournament.

Florida, their SEC rival and 2011 national runner-up in baseball found that out on Saturday.

Michael Roth pitch well and Erik Payne had a go-ahead bases-loaded triple in a 7-3 win for the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks have only beaten Florida times in five tries this season, but the win ups their record to 46-17 and have won 22 games in a row, an NCAA Tournament record.

Roth, who is 8-1 on the season, made his eighth appearance in three years in Omaha and pitched 6.1 innings.

Matt Price threw the past two innings for his 12th save.

The 2012 Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas has been won by the Arkansas over Kansas State, 29-16.

Joe Adams had his fourth punt return for a touchdown in the 2011 season as the #7 Razorbacks matched a school-record for wins with 11 by defeating the #11 Wildcats.

The other Arkansas team’s who have won 11 games in a season, is the 1964 and 1977 editions.

Adams’ 51-yard return early in the second quarter gave Arkansas (11-2) a 10-0 advantage.

Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson threw two touchdown passes.

Kansas State, who finishes the season at 10-3, scored 16 points in a row to close to within 19-16.

Wildcats quarterback Collin Klein tied the Big 12 record with his 27th rushing touchdown of the season and matched the Football Bowl Subdivision record for a quarterback.

GAME NOTES:

*Although the two schools are less than 400 miles apart, they have played only four times, with the last meeting in 1967. Kansas State leads the series 3-2.

* The Razorbacks only losses were to LSU and Alabama, the national title contenders.

* The Wildcats losses were to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

* Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson led the SEC in passing for more than 285 yards a game.

* Arkansas WR Jarius Wright had 1,029 yards receiving on 63 receptions and 11 touchdowns. All of his stats are single-season school records. He produced all of those stats in 11 games and sat our one game with an injury. He led the SEC with 6 catches and 94 yards a game.

* Kansas State QB Collin Klein is very good. He accounted for 66% of the plays that the Wildcats and 69% of the team’s total offense. The 6’5, 226-pound junior rushed for 1,099 yards this season.

The University of Cincinnati Bearcats football team and their 10,000-plus fans made the eight-hour road trip to Memphis for the Liberty Bowl and came out victorious over the SEC’s Vanderbilt Commodores, 31-24.

Head coach Butch Jones, who had a 4-8 team last year said the seniors were the reason for the team’s resurgence to 10-3 and a Big East championship.

It marks only the fifth time that the Bearcats have won 10 games in a season, 1951, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

With UC’s 13th all-time bowl appearance, their record is 7-6 overall.

The Bearcats wore a new helmet for Saturday’s game. It featured a matte black finish. The usual C-Paw logo was on the left side of the helmet, with the players’ jersey numbers on the right side.

The helmets were made for the Liberty Bowl only. The football team gets to keep the helmets as part of their bowl gifts.

The rest of their uniform was the same.
