Vitt named Saints interim coach; will still serve 6-game suspension

The New Orleans Saints have named Joe Vitt as the interim coach, replacing head coach Sean Payton.

The announcement on Thursday came despite the fact that he’ll be servingĀ  a six-game suspension by the NFL for his role in the club’s bounty system.

The Saints have been searching for a one-season head coach to replace Payton, whose 2012 season-long suspension for his role in the bounty scandal begins next Monday, April 16 and runs through next February’s Super Bowl.

Vitt stepped in as the interim coach last season when Payton suffered a broken leg.

He is the Saints’ assistant head coach and linebackers coach.

Vitt will be able to oversee the off-season training program and training camp before he has to miss the first six games.

New Orleans beat the Indianapolis Colts, 31-17 in Super Bowl XLIV in Miami, Florida.

Saints QB Drew Brees presented the 44th president of the nation with a Number 44 New Orleans jersey. The Chicago Bears fan said jokingly that he couldn’t get away wearing the jersey in the Windy City.
