Clemson University calls, Brownell leaves Wright State for another challenge

compiled from staff and wire reports

Brad Brownell (

Former Wright State University head coach Brad Brownell has a new address for next season. It is Littlejohn Coliseum, home of the Clemson University Tigers of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The 41-year-old Brownell showed up at the South Carolina school on Tuesday to meet his players, visit with school administrators and take hold of a program that has gone to the past three NCAA tournaments.

He replaced Oliver Purnell, who left after seven successful years to rebuild DePaul.  When Brownell heard that stunning news, he knew that he was a good fit for the Tigers.

But there were other coaches who were on a short list of athletic director Terry Don Phillips. Those included former Boston College coach Al Skinner, Wofford Coach Mike Young, current Tigers interim coach Ron Bradley and Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury. But Phillips offered the job to Brownell on Monday with a phone call and he accepted.

It’s the second straight time that Phillips has gone to a Ohio for his basketball coach, selecting Oliver Purnell from Dayton after the 2003 season.

Brownell went 84-45 in four years at Wright State, leading the program to 20 + wins every year and 2nd place finishes and in 2007, the Horizon League championship and the NCAA tournament.

Brownell also coached at UNC Wilmington, leading the Seahawks to the NCAA’s in 2003 and 2006. That was where, the Indiana native learned about ACC basketball and the passion it stirred in the region.
