Se Ri Pak wins playoff in Mobile tournament

compiled from staff, wire and LPGA reports

Se Ri Pak is starting to play golf  like the good old days when she was consistently winning tournaments with clutch shots. Sunday, she needed a clutch shot to win the playoff and the tournament.

Pak ended a three-year victory drought with a birdie on the third hole of a playoff with Brittany Lincicome on Sunday in the rain shortened Bell Micro LPGA Classic in Mobile, Alabama. Pak is 6-0 in playoffs.

Pak, the Hall of Famer from South Korea, used a bunker shot to set up the putt that sealed her 25th career win and the first since she won the 2007 Owens Corning Classic.

Playing the par-4  18th in the playoff, Pak hit a fairway bunker shot from about 170 yards to 10 feet to give herself the winning birdie chance while Lincicome saved par with a long downhill putt.

The Bell Micro LPGA Classic was cut to 54 holes after rain washed out the fourth round. The soggy course received about 4 inches of rain overnight and it was still drizzling throughout the playoff on number18.

Suzann Pettersen also made the playoff, but dropped out with a bogey on the second hole.

Pak, Lincicome and Pettersen were all tied at 13-under-par 203 when they teed off together in the morning. Just about an hour into their round,  the leaderboard had been shuffled and the threat of lightning in the area sent players into the clubhouse for a 5 1/2-hour wait.

Rain washed out the second round of the Texas Open on Friday, and PGA officials said more bad weather this weekend could push the tournament in Monday.

There were more than three inches of rain soaked the Oaks Course TPC San Antonio, where leader Matt Jones and the rest of the field never got on the course.

Jones, the 30-year Australian, shot a 6-under-par 66 on Thursday to finish with the first opening-round lead of his career. He has four top-10 finishes in 2010 but has yet to win on tour.

Se Ri Pak shot a 6-under 66 on Friday to take a one-stroke lead over Brittany Lincicome and Wendy Ward in the Bell Micro LPGA Classic.

Pak, who opened on the 10th tee, had five birdies in a six-hole stretch on her final nine holes to top the second round leaderboard at 9-under par on The Crossings course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail’s Magnolia Grove complex.

Pak won events in 2001 and 2002.

Several of the players wore purple ribbons and wristbands with “EB” and a heart honoring Erica Blasberg, a 25-year-old tour player who was found dead in suburban Las Vegas on Sunday. The course flag was at half-staff. There is still no word on the cause of death.
