Former CBJ player Clark back with team as scout

Former Columbus Blue Jackets right wing Chris Clark was very popular in his short time with the team. That might be a reason that he has been brought back in a new role with the team.

After being released from the American Hockey League team, the Providence Bruins in November, Clark had been looking to stay close to the game.

Columbus general manager Scott Howson has agreed to allow Clark to scout games for the Blue Jackets.

Clark, who played in 89 games for Columbus from 2009 to 2011, still lives in the Columbus suburb of Upper Arlington.

Clark also played for Calgary and Washington before joining Columbus.

In 607 NHL games, he scored 103 goals, assisted on 111 goals for 214 points.

CBJ activate Umberger from IR for tonight’s game at Nashville; recall Byers from AHL’s Falcons

Press release courtesy of Columbus Blue Jackets

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have activated left wing R.J. Umberger off injured reserve and recalled left wing Dane Byers from the Springfield Falcons, Columbus’ American Hockey League affiliate, club Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Scott Howson announced Monday morning.

R. J. Umberger (file photo)

Umberger, 29, has missed the last five games due to an upper body injury suffered at Anaheim on January 8. He has registered seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points and 12 penalty minutes 42 games with the Blue Jackets this season. He ranks fourth on the club in goals and points. He had his franchise record for consecutive games played streak come to an end at 288 games when he missed the game against Phoenix on January 13. In 516 career NHL games, he has tallied 130-162-292 and 221 penalty minutes with Columbus and Philadelphia.

Byers, 25, is scoreless with 24 penalty minutes and has an even plus/minus rating in five games with Columbus this season. He has registered 8-13-21 and has 71 penalty minutes in 31 games with Springfield this season and ranks second on the Falcons in power play goals (five) and penalty minutes. He has 92-129-221 and 753 penalty minutes in 355 career AHL games. He has appeared in 11 career NHL games, including six with the New York Rangers, and has 1-0-1 and 55 penalty minutes.

Howson says Arniel not on hot seat

Another Columbus Blue Jackets season is upon us and the season seems to be a wash before the New Year of 2012 with a record of 9-20-4, the worst in the league.

With so much anticipation before the season started with all of the new acquisitions and the advancement of some of the younger players, fans, media were expecting at least a winning season with a playoff run.

But now, there are rumors around Columbus and the NHL that head coach Scott Arniel could be fired at any time and that GM Scott Howson is not far behind.

After all, to this date there have been six NHL coaches who have already been fired and three of those teams had winning records at the time of their dismissals.

Will Arniel be the seventh?

But Howson told media personnel covering the team for Sunday night’s game in St. Louis that Arniel is not the problem and that the players have to do a better job with their performances.

At this time, the Blue Jackets are 15 points behind the Dallas Stars for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference if they were to make an unbelievable playoff push.

Columbus is obviously struggling right now, but it started last season. In their past 54 games, the team is 12-31-11 and have won just games in regulation.
