OSU SPRING GAME: Miller & Scarlet team beats Gray, 20-14

COLUMBUS, OHIO — The Urban Meyer era was ushered in on a chilly, overcast day at venerable Ohio Stadium as 81,112 faithful fans braved the elements and were entertained with a 20-14 win by the Scarlet over the Gray.

Braxton Miller passed the ball well in the new spread offense

Running back Rod Smith ran 7 yards for the game-winning touchdown with 5:29 to go for the Scarlet team.

Defensive back Christian Bryant sealed the game by picking off Gray quarterback Kenny Guiton with 2:52 to play to thwart a comeback attempt.

Eventhough Braxton Miller said in the postgame that fans and media only witnessed “30 percent of the offense”, the Scarlet rolled up 305 total yards and the Gray 227. 532 yards is not pretty good for only 30 percent. It makes you wonder how good the offense could be with “100 percent” of it in place?

Miller led the Scarlet stats going 24 of 31 with one interception and 258 yards.

Michael Thomas emerged as a wide receiver threat catching 12 balls for 131 yards for the Scarlet. Teammate Chris Fields caught 5 passes for 72 yards.

Kenny Guiton proved that he is capable of backing up Miller

Backup QB Kenny Guiton had a nice game throwing the ball as well for the Gray team. He was 16 of 24 with 185 yards, interception and a touchdown.

His wide receivers were equally as good. Philly Brown caught seven passes for 90 yards and Devin Smith caught a 28-yard TD pass.

The defenses sacked the QB seven times on the quick-whistle to avoid injuries.

Leading tacklers in the game include Adam Griffin with 9 and Orhian Johnson with 7 to lead the Gray. Ryan Shazier with 7 led the Scarlet.

Guiton and Washington lead the Gray over the Scarlet in the annual Spring Game

Ohio Stadium scoreboard says it all (

Everybody who was in attendance at the annual Ohio State Spring game (65,223) were interested in seeing Terrelle Pryor at QB, who would be emerging at wide receiver, who would be the #1 tight end, how the defense would replace key graduated starters and who would emerge at the #2 QB spot.

Well, all of those questions were answered, but the one that shocked everyone including members of the media, was third-string quarterback Kenny Guiton.

The little-known and little-used quarterback threw a 45-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Taurian Washington with 55 seconds left in the 4th quarter on Saturday to give the gray a 17-14 vistory over the Scarlet in Ohio State’s annual intrasquad scrimmage which wraps up 15 spring practices covering a month.

“I felt real comfortable. I had three of the starting lineman to protect me, so there was no reason for me to be jittery or antsy in the pocket. So I read the defense, took my time and just played ball,” said Guiton, a redshirt freshman from Houston, Texas.

Guiton completed 11 of 21 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns, both to Washington, who had three catches for 83 yards.

Guiton’s performance was a surprise to many. He was the last player offered in his recruiting class and had to wait until two other recruits Ohio State wanted, didn’t sign, so the scholarship went to Guiton.

The number 1 quarterback, Terrelle Pryor completed 8-of-12 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game early. He was not brought out to speak to reporters after the game, which shocked and angered many members of the media.

The teams swapped across midway through the first quarter. The first score of the game was Taurian Washington snagging a 28-yard scoring pass from Guiton.

Then Pryor, not to be undone by his understudy Guiton, took the Scarlet team on a 4-play, 78 yard drive, elapsing 1:37 off the clock to tie the game at 7-7 when Dane Sanzenbacher on a 12 yard touchdown.

The game stayed 7-7 until the fourth quarter.

Drew Basil ended the scoring drought by kicking a 47-yard field goal at the 10:31 mark of the fourth quarter to put the Gray up 10-7.

The Scarlet came back to go up 14-10 on Bo Delande’s 4-yard touchdown run with 4:48 left in the game.

After Delande’s scoring run, the Scarlet shocked the Gray with an on-side kick that was recovered by the Scarlet’s Spencer Smith. Joe Bauserman, who is the backup quarterback, hit James Jackson on a 43-yard pass play. After a penalty, the Scarlet had the ball in a first-and-5 situation at the Gray 13 with just over 3 minutes left.

But Bauserman’s throw into the end zone was intercepted by Nate Oliver, who returned the ball to the 11. Guiton took over from that point.

He completed passes of 8, 15, 16 and 11 yards to move the ball into Scarlet territory before lobbing a pass down the left sideline near the goal line where Washington  pulled in between defenders Dominic Clarke and Nate Ebner.

The Scarlet tried to mount a comeback but Taylor Rice intercepted a long Joe Bauserman pass in the final minute.

The Buckeyes will return nine starters on offense when they open their season on Thursday September 2 against the Marshall Thundering Herd at home.

Saturday’s Spring Game was dubbed the Scarlet, Gray and Pink Game with coaches wearing pink caps and players sporting jerseys with pink accents that will be auctioned off to benefit the Stephanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. The wife of former Ohio State and NFL linebacker Chris Spielman died this past November.

Honorary Head Coach of the Scarlet team was John Reed, the former football coach at Coldwater High School. Overall as a head coach, his record  is 283-126-1. The 283 wins ranks him 11th all-time for Ohio High School Football Coaches wins. He was a 2006 Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Inductee.

At Coldwater, his record is 168-31 from 1995-2009. He recently had to resign his post due to cancer of the esophagus. Two of his former Cavaliers played on the Scarlet team on Saturday. Because coach Reed was too ill to attend, his former players put together a video tribute that was played on the scoreboard in Ohio Stadium.
