NHL PLAYOFFS: Western Conference (Friday results)

compiled from staff and wire reports

SAN JOSE SHARKS 6  COLORADO AVALANCHE 5 OT

Devin Setoguchi deflected in a loose puck for a power-play goal 5:32 into overtime and San Jose rallied to even the Western Conference series at 1-1. The game was in San Jose, California.

Goalie Evgeni Nabokov earned his fifth overtime win in 13 playoff games. He allowed 5 goals on the first 13 shots he faced, getting mock applause when he stopped an easy dump-in midway through the third period.

NASHVILLE PREDATORS 4  CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS 1

J.P. Dumont scored twice in the final period and the Nashville Predators won for the first time on the road in the playoffs, rallying to beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 in Chicago in the Western Conference quarterfinal opener.

It was Nashville’s first road playoff win in 11 tries and it was a dramatic one with former Blackhawk Dumont burning his former team in the third.

DETROIT RED WINGS 7  PHOENIX COYOTES 4

Henrik Zetterberg scored three goals, including the game-winner with 6:06 left, and Detroit beat Phoenix in Glendale to tie the Western Conference series, 1-1.

COLORADO AVALANCHE-SAN JOSE SHARKS

Chris Stewart’s shot deflected off San Jose defenseman Rob Blake’s skate and into the net with 50 seconds left in regulation to give Colorado a road win in the opener of their playoff series.

This is a shocking win considering that the Avalanche were the worst team in the Western Conference last season.

The loss was the latest playoff disappointment for the Sharks, who have always made a habit of following up stellar regular season play with early playoff exits. San Jose has lost Game 1 at home in its past four playoff series.

PHOENIX COYOTES-DETROIT RED WINGS

Derek Morris broke a tie early in the third period and assisted on two other power-play goals in Phoenix’s 3-2 win over Detroit in Glendale, Arizona in Game 1 of their playoffs series.

Ilya Bryzgalov (nhl)

Keith Yandle and Wojtek Wolski also lit the lamp and Ilya Bryzgalov  made 38 saves to lift the Coyotes win a playoff game for the first time since April 20, 2002, the last year they were in the playoffs.
