Adam Foote and Colorado Avalanche agree on new deal

The Colorado Avalanche will have Adam Foote back after signing their captain to a one-year deal.

Foote was a very important cog in Colorado’s turnaround in 2009-2010 as he helped guide a  young squad into the playoffs a season after finishing last in the Western Conference. the Avalanche almost upset the number-1 seeded San Jose Sharks before  losing in 6 games.

The 39-year-old defenseman finished the regular season with 9 assists in 67 contests.

To Colorado, his biggest contributions may have come away from the ice. Foote invited rookie forward Matt Duchene to live in his basement, serving Duchene’s mentor and easing his transition into the NHL.

Under Foote’s guidance, Duchene quickly adapted to life in the NHL, proving to be be quite a skilled with the puck. Duchene led all NHL rookies in points (55) and tied for most goals (24) with John Tavares of the New York Islanders.

Foote has played in 1,107 games in 18 seasons and amassed 1,501 penalty minutes playing for Colorado and Columbus.

Dustin Byfuglien becoming a regular hero again for Chicago

257-pound Dustin Byfuglien is starting to become a force for the Chicago Blackhawks and is showing he is not only rugged but can score as dish out assists as well. He has helped lead his team to the Stanley Cup finals.

Byfuglien scored his third go-ahead goal of the Western Conference finals, converting on a third-period power-play as the Blackhawks rallied to beat the San Jose Sharks 4-2 on Sunday and complete a surprising four-game sweep that sent them to the NHL finals for the first time since 1992.

Chicago will play either Montreal or Philadelphia and be in the hunt for its first NHL championship since 1961.

“Big Buff” Dustin Byfuglien leads Blackhawks to victory

The Chicago Blackhawks are within one win of the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in 18 years.

Dave Bolland’s pass from behind the net found Byfuglien in stride as he skated fast and hard into the slot Friday night. That goal had a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks and a 3-0 series lead in the Western Conference finals.

Two assists from Jonathan Toews, and 44 saves from Antti Niemi put the Blackhawks on the brink of their first appearance in the finals since 1992. They will have the chance to wrap up the series sweep at home on Sunday.

Toews’ two assists gave him a point in 12 straight playoff games, breaking a club record he had shared with Hall of Famer Stan Mikita, who had an 11-game streak in 1962. Toews has 25 points in the 2010 playoffs.

Blackhawks win Game 1 over Sharks, 2-1

Chicago Blackhawks goalie Antti Niemi is starting prove to the NHL skeptics that he is of championship caliber.

Niemi made 44 saves, Dustin Byfuglien scored the tiebreaking goal with 6:45 remaining in regulation to help Chicago get off to a fast start for a change this postseason by beating the San Jose Sharks 2-1 Sunday in the opener of the Western Conference final.

Niemi looked so sharp in stopping all but one shot in his first career start against San Jose, helping the Blackhawks kill four of five power plays including a 6-on-4 advantage in the closing minute. The win snapped a run of four straight series-opening losses for Chicago.

Patrick Sharp also scored for the Blackhawks, who improved to 6-1 on the road this postseason.

Rookie Jason Demers scored San Jose’s only goal, who fell to 0-4 at home all-time in two trips to the conference final.

Ryan O’Reilly was credited with a bizarre goal 51 seconds into overtime following an errant clear by defenseman Dan Boyle, giving the home fans a 1-0 Colorado win in OT to go up 2-1 in the Western Conference series.

Petr Prucha and Radim Vrbata scored midway through the third period, and Ilya Bryzgalov made 29 saves to help Phoenix win 4-2 in Joe Louis Arena and take a 2-1 lead in the series.

Antii Niemi made 23 saves for a shutout in his second career playoff game, Dave Bolland and Patrick Kane scored and Chicago beat Nashville 2-0 in the Windy City to tie the series at 1-1.
