Columbus Crew Notes

The Columbus Crew have only played two games and are 1-1-0.

The team has shown potential and they’v also shown their youth with mistakes on defense.

The 2013 edition of the franchise also has several new players who have made their debuts in the games against Chivas USA and Vancouver.

Six players have made their Major League Soccer and Crew debuts: forward Ryan Finley, defenders Glauber and Tyson Wahl, midfielders Dominic Oduro, Agustin Viana and Matias Sanchez.

Gaven out of action

One of the key players on the Crew team is Eddie Gaven, who suffered an injury recently and was scratched from Saturday’s lineup due to an apparent ankle injury.

Gaven’s a key commodity in the midfield and can’t be out of action on a long-term basis or this team can kiss the season goodbye.

Head coach Robert Warzycha told the media last Saturday in a news release that the 26-year-old Gaven was not going to play at Vancouver due to the turf at BC Place.

Gaven is a fan favorite and has made 200 starts in a Crew uniform.

His status for this weekend’s home opener vs. San Jose Earthquakes has not been determined.

Crew ties San Jose, 0-0 but clinches playoff spot (Saturday)

William Hesmer (MLS)

The Columbus Crew clinched a playoff spot for the third straight year with a 0-0 tie against the San Jose Earthquakes last Saturday night at Crew Stadium in Columbus.

Although the Crew fell to second place in the Eastern Conference, just a point behind the New York Red Bulls, who beat Kansas City, 1-0 on Saturday, the Black & Gold can finish no lower than second place.

Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer established a new franchise record for shutouts in a season, with his 11th, a record he had previously shared with his counterpart, Jon Busch, a former member of the Crew. Hesmer tied the record in (2008) and Busch set the record in (2004).

Columbus Crew drops 2-1 decision in Guatamela City against Municipal in CONCACAF action

The Columbus Crew lost 2-1 to Municipal on Wednesday night at Estadio Nacional in Guatemala City in match five of CONCACAF Champions League Group B play. Former LA Galaxy forward Guillermo Ramirez netted both goals for Municipal while defender Andy Iro scored for the Crew.

Daylong heavy rain continued through the match leaving the pitch at Estadio Nacional with standing water in several places. Players struggled with footing and balls skipped in some spots and came to a halt in other spots on the pitch.

The result left the Crew with nine points and dropped it into second place in Group B, one point behind Santos, which beat Joe Public 5-1.

Municipal climbed to eight points, but will have to travel to Mexico to face the tough Santos team in its final match on October 19. Columbus will travel to face already eliminated Joe Public on October 21. Only the first two teams in each group qualify for the quarter finals.

Columbus returns to action this Saturday, October 2, when it welcomes the San Jose Earthquakes to Crew Stadium. The match starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised regionally by ONN-TV.
