Abbott wins third Figure Skating title at U.S. Championships

26-year-old Jeremy Abbott won his third title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in San Jose, California, with a final score of 273.58.

That was the highest score ever at the U.S. championships.

Adam Rippon was second and Ross Miner finished third for a second straight year.

Abbott, who was born in Aspen, Colorado, but lives in Detroit, Michigan, was ranked 8th in the world at the end of 2011.

In other news from the championships:

Caydee Denney and John Coughlin won their first pairs title together after winning the previous two years with other partners, which is a rarity in figure skating.

Wagner wins first women’s title at Figure Skating Championships

20-year-old Ashley Wagner won her first title at the Women’s U.S. Figure Skating Championships over the weekend in San Jose, California.

Wagner totaled 187.02 points to finish seven points ahead of two-time champion Alissa Czisny.

Wagner was born in Heidelberg, Germany while her dad, Eric, was in the United States Army.

The 5-foot-3 inch Wagner was ranked 25th in the world at the end of 2011.

Also at the women’s championships, the skating duo of Meryl Davis and Charlie White won their fourth straight dance title.

SAN JOSE SHARKS 6  COLORADO AVALANCHE 5 OT

Devin Setoguchi deflected in a loose puck for a power-play goal 5:32 into overtime and San Jose rallied to even the Western Conference series at 1-1. The game was in San Jose, California.

Goalie Evgeni Nabokov earned his fifth overtime win in 13 playoff games. He allowed 5 goals on the first 13 shots he faced, getting mock applause when he stopped an easy dump-in midway through the third period.

NASHVILLE PREDATORS 4  CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS 1

J.P. Dumont scored twice in the final period and the Nashville Predators won for the first time on the road in the playoffs, rallying to beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 in Chicago in the Western Conference quarterfinal opener.

It was Nashville’s first road playoff win in 11 tries and it was a dramatic one with former Blackhawk Dumont burning his former team in the third.

DETROIT RED WINGS 7  PHOENIX COYOTES 4

Henrik Zetterberg scored three goals, including the game-winner with 6:06 left, and Detroit beat Phoenix in Glendale to tie the Western Conference series, 1-1.

Zetterberg scored the deciding goal when he took a rebound off a shot by Todd Bertuzzi and fed it into an open net. He added an empty-net goal with 47 seconds left.

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA–5th seeded Butler continues to roll, squeezing out a tight game against #13 seed Murray State.

Butler now 30-4, have won a nation’s longest 22 games in a row. They were led by Ronald Nored with 15 points.

Murray State, now 31-5, were led by Isaiah Canaan with 14 points.

KANSAS STATE 84 BRIGHAM YOUNG 74

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA–2nd seeded Kansas State, used it’s athleticism to put away 7th seed BYU.

Kansas State was led by Jacob Pullen with 34 points. They’re now 28-7.

BYU ends the season at 30-6, was led by Jimmer Fredette with 21 points.

WASHINGTON 82  NEW MEXICO 64

San Jose, California-The Washington Huskies, using a fast break attack that the Lobos couldn’t keep up with, upset 3rd-seeded New Mexico.

Washington, 26-9 was led by Quincy Pondexter with 18 points and Isaiah Thomas with 15 and Matthew Bryan-Amanning chipped in with 15 points and 9 rebounds.

30-5 New Mexico was led by Dairese Gary with 25 points.

KENTUCKY 90  WAKE FOREST 60

New Orleans, Louisiana– The 34-2 Wildcats breezed to an easy victory against a struggling Wake Forest team. With their biggest fan in attendance, actress Ashley Judd, Kentucky used their athleticism and quickness to dominate the game.

Sophomore guard Darius Miller scored a career-high 20 points, 16 in the first half.
