Newark’s Toby Hardwick finishes 17th in Foot Locker national event

Newark senior cross country runner Toby Hardwick placed 17th at the Foot Locker national cross country championship in San Diego, California.

Hardwick’s time was 15 minutes, 42 seconds in the 5,000-meter race.

Hardwick was one of the top runners in the state of Ohio this past fall.

Toby Hardwick, a senior from Newark High School in Ohio, is competing today in the 35th annual Foot Locker national cross country championships in San Diego, California.

Hardwick recently finished second in the Ohio Division I state cross country meet.

Former pitching phenom Mark Prior making comeback with Reds

For the fourth straight Spring Training, former MLB pitching phenom, Mark Prior is trying to make a comeback.

Now 32 years old, the righthanded Prior has signed a minor-league contract with the Cincinnati Reds.

Prior was fantastic with the Chicago Cubs from 2002-2006. He had a won-lost record of 42-29 with an ERA of 3.51 with 757 strikeouts. The San Diego, California native was an All-Star in 2003.

His MLB career ended when he endured various injuries totaling 12 trips to the disabled list.

Prior has not pitched in the major leagues since 2006.

He pitched in the minor leagues last season with the Boston Red Sox at Triple-A Pawtucket, appearing in 19 games with a 3.96 ERA.

Former USC, NFL LB Seau dead at 43 of apparent suicide

Former NFL All-Pro linebacker Junior Seau has died at age 43 of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest on Wednesday.

Oceanside, California police were called to Seau’s home after his girlfriend police around 9:30 a.m. Pacific Time that she saw him in his bedroom unresponsive. EMT’s were unable to revive the former NFL star.

The San Diego, California native played for three NFL teams in 20 years, San Diego, Miami and the New England Patriots. His final season was 2009.

Seau was a 12-time Pro Bowl selection, 10-time All-Pro, 2-time AFC champion, was elected to the San Diego Chargers Hall of Fame and their 50th anniversary team. He had 1,849 tackles, with 56.5 sacks and 18 interceptions.

The Chargers made him the #5 overall selection in the 1990 NFL Draft as an All-American out of the University of Southern California.

Corona leads USA over Cuba in Olympic qualifier

Joe Corona scored three goals as the United States beat Cuba 6-0 in the Americans’ opening match of the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament in Nashville, Tennessee.

Corona is a 21 year-old from San Diego, California who plays for Club Tijuana in the Mexican League.
