Richards gets first win as Blue Jackets beats Coyotes, 4-3

The Columbus Blue Jackets have waited awhile to get a win at home.

It came last night at Nationwide Arena, after center Derick Brassard blocked a shot with three seconds left to help seal a 4-3 win over a team the Jackets usually have trouble beating, the Phoenix Coyotes.

Columbus survived a third period where the Coyotes kept pressing to tie the game. It was the team’s first at home since December 13 and their first win in regulation at home since November. It also represented their first win under interim head coach Todd Richards.

Brassard was not the only hero in last night’s win. In his seventh NHL game, Tomas Kubalik and left wing Ryan Russell in his fourth NHL game, each scored their first NHL goals.

Blue Jackets star Rick Nash scored a goal and the assist for the four goals were distributed among eight players. Let’s not forget about goaltender Curtis Sanford, who made 32 saves, 27 of them in the final two periods.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME

* Derick Brassard, Blue Jackets center, scored a goal, collected an assist and a game-ending block of a shot

* Lauri Korpiloski, Coyotes left wing, scored a goal, dished out two assists and was in on every goal for his team

* Ryan Russell, Blue Jackets left wing, scored his first NHL goal which turned out to be important in the team’s win

The Columbus Blue Jackets off-season moves are to strengthen the NHL team but also their minor-league affiliate as well.

Their AHL team, the Springfield Falcons, finished at 35-40-2-3 last season, 12th out of 15 teams in the Eastern Conference of the American Hockey League.

The Springfield management want the team to be more competitive. They will hire a coach to tutor the defenseman, which is very much needed.

The signings of forwards Dane Byers, Martin St. Pierre and Cody Bass will help the Falcons.

The 25-year-old Byers scored 15 goals and 31 assists in 75 games with three teams.

St. Pierre, who turns 28 in August, played last season in Austria, Russia and Finland. He has played well in the AHL, scoring 405 points in 367 career games.

Bass, who is 24, scored six goals with nine assists in 58 games for Binghamton in the AHL last season.

The team has also signed AHL MVP Alexandre Giroux, a winger, along with defenseman Aaron Johnson, forward Ryan Russell and goaltender Curtis Sanford.
