Reds outfielder Chris Heisey getting ready for rehab stint with Pensacola

The Cincinnati Reds have been without the services of outfielder Chris Heisey since April 29. The 28-year-old outfielder, who is on the disabled list, is expected to begin a rehab assignment on Monday with Double-A Pensacola.

Heisey, who was sharing left field with Xavier Paul during the absence of starter Ryan Ludwick, will be  heading to  Pensacola, Florida on Sunday. He was injured on April 27 in a game against the Washington Nationals. He not having a good year only batting .173 with two home runs and five RBIs in 23 games.

Reds put Choo in centerfield during spring training games

When the Cincinnati Reds traded the talented, speedy but often slump-ridden Drew Stubbs to the Cleveland Indians during the off-season, fans and media wondered who would play center field.

Sure, the Reds received Shin-Soo Choo in the trade to become their leadoff hitter, which would strengthen the team’s batting order. But Choo was a rightfielder with the Indians.

All told, Choo has made only 10 starts in center field in his eight major league seasons, but the Reds will give him the first chance at the job. After all, he has speed and an arm to play the outfield’s toughest position.

If that doesn’t work out, the Reds can play Jay Bruce in center field and move Choo back to his customary spot in right field. Ryan Ludwick will stay in left field. Either way, the Reds will have one of baseball’s top slugging outfields.

Choo batting leadoff means that Brandon Phillips, the Reds best option there the past few years, will now back second which is best for him.

Choo’s on-base percentage  of .373 last season, was better than the Reds’ leadoff hitters which were the worst in the National League.

The Reds lineup is supposed to look this way: Choo CF, Phillips 2B, Votto 1B, Ludwick LF, Frazier 3B, Bruce RF, Cozart SS, Hanigan C and the pitcher will always be ninth. A solid lineup indeed!

Radio, TV reports say Reds, Ludwick agree to 2-year deal pending physical

There are reports on radio, television and the internet reporting that the Cincinnati Reds and outfielder Ryan Ludwick have agreed to a two-year, $15-million deal pending completion of a physical.

Ludwick signed a bargain-basement one-year, $2-million contract with Cincinnati in 2012 and emerged as the club’s regular left fielder and one of its most potent hitters to go along with Brandon Phillips, Joey Votto, Jay Bruce and Todd Frazier.

After struggling with the San Diego Padres and Pittsburgh Pirates in 2011, the 34-year-old Ludwick, had a bounce-back season in 2012 where he hit .275 with 26 home runs and 80 RBIs to help Cincinnati win the National League Central Division title.

He has played 10 Major League seasons with the Rangers, Indians, Cardinals, Padres, Pirates and Reds and is a .263 career hitter with 143 homers, 530 runs batted in and 850 base hits.

Reds proving they can win without Votto; beat Brewers, 6-2

The Cincinnati Reds are 4-2 since Joey Votto had to go on the disabled list earlier in the week with a torn knee cartilage.

Each game, a different set of players are leading the team to victory.

In Saturday’s 6-2 win over the slumping, defending NL Central Division champion Milwaukee Brewers, Ryan Ludwick, Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce led the offense. Ludwick and Phillips hit home runs and Bruce had two more hits.

The Reds are 6-2 against the Brewers this season.

They basically put the game away early in the first inning by scoring four runs off losing pitcher Yovani Gallardo, who drops to 8-7 on the season.

The oldest member of the Reds starting pitchers, Bronson Arroyo at 35 years old, rebounded from Monday’s three-inning stint vs. Arizona, a 5-3 loss, by pitching solidly in six innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He’s 5-6 in 2012.

Ludwick’s first-inning homer into the upper deck in left field, made it 74 straight games in Great American Ball Park with a home run. It’s the longest such streak since Coors Field produced 80 games in a row in 2002-03, according to STATS LLC.
