Buckeyes ride five-run eighth to win over Gophers in Big Ten Tournament


Ohio State came from behind with a five-run eighth inning to defeat Minnesota, 5-3, in the first game of the Big Ten tournament Wednesday afternoon at Huntington Park. With the win, the Buckeyes improved to 26-25 on the season and will play Illinois on Thursday.

Ohio State starting pitcher Drew Rucinski cruised through the first two innings until the Gophers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

On the other side, Minnesota starter T.J. Oakes retired 10 consecutive Buckeyes before a leadoff single in the fifth by David Corna.

After giving up a run in the fourth, Rucinski shut down the Gophers during the middle innings, but he ran into trouble in the eighth and was knocked out of the game. Minnesota upped their lead to 3-0 against reliever Andrew Armstrong.

Ohio State finally woke up the bats in the eighth inning by scoring five runs on five hits and two Gophers errors.

With Minnesota up 3-2, closer Scott Matyas struck out Josh Dezse before Matt Streng single into right field to score Tim Wetzel to tie the game at 3-3. Ryan Cypret then scored the go-ahead run on a failed pickoff attempt by the catcher and Corna doubled off the top of the left field fence to score Streng and the Buckeyes led 5-3.

Rucinski pitched 7.1 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out three. Jared Strayer picked up the win in relief for the Buckeyes to improve his record to 4-3 on the season while Dezse worked a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save of the season.

Ohio State rallies to upend 19th rated Oklahoma State, 3-2

The Ohio State baseball team pulled an upset over a top-ranked team on Wednesday night.

Joe Ciamacco scored the go-ahead run on Ryan Cypret’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and the Buckeyes beat #19 Oklahoma State 3-2 at Bill Davis Stadium.

Andrew Armstrong, 2-0 on the season, pitched 2/3 of an inning to get the victory and Josh Dezse pitched the ninth for his third save.

The Buckeyes evened their season record at 22-22.

Oklahoma State, which drops to 32-16 for the season, led 2-0 before Dezse and Matt Streng produced RBI grounders to tie the game in the seventh for Ohio State.

Buckeyes beat Michigan in series opener, 7-2


The Ohio State baseball Buckeyes beat Michigan, 7-2 in the Friday night opener of their three-game series in front of 1,757 fnas at Bill Davis Stadium.

With the victory, OSU improves to 17-18, 7-6 in the Big Ten while Michigan falls to 13-26, 6-7 in conference play. The win also keeps the Buckeyes in a tie for third in the conference, a game behind Michigan State and Purdue.

Ohio State and Michigan will conclude the series with a doubleheader beginning at 3:05 p.m. Saturday, April 30 because of a threat of rain moving into the Columbus, Ohio area on Sunday.

Drew Rucinski picked up the win to move to 5-1 on the season, hurling 6.2 innings, giving up six hits, two runs (one earned) while striking out seven. Jared Strayer and Josh Dezse retired the last six Wolverines in order over the last two innings to close out the win.

Rucinski lowered his Big Ten leading ERA to 2.11.

The two highest strikeout games of Rucinski’s career have both come at the expense of the Michigan Wolverines. He struck out a career-high nine in a complete game win May 1, 2010 in Ann Arbor. He moves up to 2-0 with a 2.21 and 20 strikeouts in 20.1 innings pitched in his career against the Wolverines. Rucinski has given up two earned runs or fewer in eight of his nine starts this season and one earned run or fewer in six of those games.

Dezse finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBI’s and a run scored while Ryan Cypret and Tyler Engle each recorded two-hit games. Cypret and Dezse each recorded their 13th multi-hit games of the season to tie for the team lead.

Dezse posted his team-high ninth multiple RBI game.

Penn State beats OSU to win series

The Penn State Nittany Lions pulled out a nip-and-tuck game which featured five lead changes against the visiting Buckeyes, 10-9. The win allowed the Nittany Lions to take the rubber game of the three-game series.

Matt Streng had three hits, including a double, for Ohio State who drops to 16-18 overall, 6-6 in the Big Ten. Tim Wetzel and Ryan Cypret each had two hits.

Penn State scored twice in the bottom of the seventh on a error, a walk and two singles.

Northwestern’s 3-run first inning does in Buckeyes

Ohio State starting pitcher Dean Wolosiansky started the game off being wild in the first inning, walking three straight batters and throwing two wild pitches as Northwestern scored three runs.

The Wildcats made that first inning hold up as the Buckeyes were unable to comeback in a 7-3 loss in Bill Davis Stadium.

Olentangy Liberty High School graduate Ryan Cypret had four hits to lead all Buckeyes hitters.

The Buckeyes (9-11) cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Wildcats (8-15) scored twice in the sixth and seventh innings to put the game out of reach.

The series is tied 1 game apiece.
