ESPN has agreed to pay an average of $80 million a year to broadcast the Rose Bowl game from 2015 through 2026. The agreement was reported by the Sports Business Journal.
The current deal is a payout of $30 million and the jump to $80 million is an increase of 167 percent.
The Pac-12 and the Big Ten will be able to keep all media revenue from the game, except in the years where the Rose Bowl hosts a national championship semifinal game. During those years, the revenue will be distributed to all Football Bowl Subdivision conferences.

Bret Bielema (megasportsnews.com photo)
The Wisconsin Badgers have been very successful since Bret Bielema was promoted from defensive coordinator when Barry Alvarez retired. Their record is 60-19 in his six seasons.
With that record comes a reward as the university extended Bielema’s contract through the end of the 2016 season.
Bielema had his five-year contract extended through January 31, 2017.
He has led the Badgers to their first back-to-back Rose Bowls in 12 years.

The 78th annual Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, to some folks is an unknown bowl.
Most people don’t realize it is the second-oldest bowl in the nation to the Rose Bowl.
The game takes place at 2 pm ET on CBS-TV and has Georgia Tech (8-4) going up against Utah (7-5).
The Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech ended the season by losing four of its last six games. They ended 2010 in almost the same fashion going 1-5. Tech started the season at 6-0.
Tech has lost six bowl games in a row and their senior captains, Steven Sylvester and Roddy Jones, have not enjoyed a bowl win in their fantastic careers.
Tech was picked to win the ACC’s Coastal Division but ended up tied for second.
The Utah Utes were in contention in the South Division of the Pac-12, but had an upset loss to the lowly Colorado Buffaloes on November 25.
The Utes have a good defense which ranks seventh nationally in rushing defense, allowing 97 yards a game. They rank 18th in points given up at 19.7.
Georgia Tech ranks third nationally in rushing, averaging 316.8 yards a game. The Yellow Jackets rank 34th in scoring at 34.9 a game.

The Meineke Car Care Bowl in Houston on December 31 pits two teams with 6-6 records, Texas A&M and Northwestern.
The Aggies have fired head coach Mike Sherman due to the team falling shy of high expectations.
Tim DeRuyter, the team’s defensive coordinator, has been given the ship to run until after the game on New Year’s Eve. The Aggies lost four of five games to end the season.
Northwestern had a bad streak of their own in the middle of the season, losing to Army, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa and Penn State before winning four of the last five games to get bowl eligible.
The Wildcats are in the postseason for a program-record fourth season in a row. The fifth-year seniors on the team have 36 wins in their careers, the best ever for a five year group at the Chicago area school. But it has been since January 1, 1949, that Northwestern has ended the season with a bowl win. They won the Rose Bowl that year.
The Wildcats are led by QB Dan Persa, who completed 74.2% of his passes in their ball-control, horizontal passing offense.
Texas A&M’s QB is Ryan Tanneyhill who was 12th in the nation in passing and he threw 28 touchdown passes to talented receivers Ryan Swope and Jeff Fuller.

The University of Pittsburgh recently hired Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst as its new head coach and they hope he sticks around for a long time.
The 46-year-old Chryst will be the Panthers fourth head coach in the last 13 months with Dave Wannstedt, Mike Haywood and Todd Graham before him.
He replaces the most-recent coach in Graham who left to take the Arizona State job.
Chryst made the Wisconsin Badgers into an offensive powerhouse since joining the program in 2005. This season, the Badgers ranked fourth in scoring with 44.6 points per game and winning the Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl spot.
Pitt will be playing in the BBVA Compass Bowl against SMU on January 7 with Keith Peterson serving as the interim coach.
