Nadal to play in Federer’s hometown tournament for first time in nine years

Rafael Nadal of Spain is scheduled to play at Roger Federer’s hometown tournament for the first time in nine years.

Organizers of the Swiss Indoors announced their top tennis stars for the October 19-27 event in Basel. The field is headed by five-time champion Federer, Nadal and defending champion Juan Martin del Potro for the tournament which is played on a hardcourt surface.

Nadal has a 19-10 career mark against Federer, including a quarterfinal win last month at Indian Wells, California.

Nadal last participated in Basel in 2004, losing in the first round to Rainer Schuettler of Germany.

 

German Tennis star Haas earns 500th match win

Tennis star Tommy Haas has become the fourth still-active player to win 500 matches on the ATP Tour, joining Roger Federer with 871, Rafael Nadal with 583 and Lleyton Hewitt with 566.

Haas is the 38th player in the Open era to earn the feat. Boris Becker with 713 was the first German player to achieve the milestone.

The 34-year-old German, who turned professional in 1996, has won 13 career titles, reached the feat with a win over American Jesse Levine in the second round of the Erste Bank Open, 6-4, 6-2.

Federer, Azarenka recent tennis tour winners

Roger Federer beat Juan Martin del Potro 6-1, 6-4 to win the ABN Amro World Tennis tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

It was the Swedish star’s first title of the new year.

The 30-year-old Federer has won 81.31% of his matches for a record of 818-188 record in singles matches.

Top-ranked Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, which is a part of Russia, did not allow a lingering ankle injury stop her from winning the Qatar Open in Doha, routing Sam Stosur of Australia 6-1, 6-2.

Azarenka, 22-years-old has a singles record of 296-122 and has won 11 tournaments.

Djokovic is still the man to beat in tennis; dumps Ferrer

Novak Djokovic was the top tennis player in 2011 and seems like it’ll be the same way in 2012.

He routed David Ferrer 6-2, 6-1 over the weekend to win the World Tennis Championship exhibition tournament.

The title was the first Abu Dhabi title for #1 ranked Djokovic, who earlier had beaten Gael Monfils and swept past Roger Federer on his way to the finals.

Fifth-ranked Ferrer had upset #2 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals.

Federer advances from group stage undefeated in ATP finale

Roger Federer finished the group stage at the ATP World Tour Finals with an unbeaten record after defeating Mardy Fish 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 for his third win at the 2011 season-ending event in London.

Fish had already been eliminated due to losing his first two matches.
