MLS member, Chivas USA recently announced that Robin Fraser, a dominating player during his 10-year Major League Soccer career and a respected assistant coach in four seasons with Real Salt Lake, has been named as their new head coach.

The 44-year-old Fraser, will get ready for the MLS SuperDraft, training camp and the 2011 regular season, which has Chivas USA kicking off Saturday March 19 against Sporting Kansas City at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Fraser has become one of the most widely respected Assistant Coaches in Major League Soccer due to his work in four seasons with Real Salt Lake and head coach Jason Kreis.

Since Fraser joined RSL in 2007, the team has won an MLS Cup (2009) and has set a record for most consecutive home matches without a loss, currently at 25 league games and 33 matches in all competitions.

In 10 MLS seasons as a player, Fraser established himself as one of the league’s top defenders, earning two MLS Defender of the Year awards in 1999 and 2004, as well as earning five appearances on the MLS All-Star Team and MLS Best XI (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2004).

The first-ever pick of the LA Galaxy in the 1996 MLS Inaugural Player Draft (fourth overall), Fraser played in 260 games (256 starts) with three teams, the Galaxy from 1996-2000, Colorado Rapids 2001-2003 and the Columbus Crew (2004-2005).

Fraser was born in Kingston, Jamaica, but attended high school in Miami, Florida and went to Florida International University.

After receiving his United States citizenship in 1986, the central defender made 27 appearances for the United States National Team, from 1988 to 2001.

Fraser and his wife Ashley, have two daughters, Danielle and Nicola.

Crappy Game but Crew prevails over Real Salt Lake, 1-0

Columbus, Ohio – A goal by Mr. Reliable, Guillermo Barros Schelotto on a penalty kick in the 38th minute was just enough to propel the 2008 MLS Champion Columbus Crew over the 2009 MLS champion Real Salt Lake, 1-0 over the weekend in Crew Stadium. The game between the past two MLS Champions was played to the best, very physical, good defense and low scoring before 14,322 in a rain-soaked Stadium. As Crew coach Robert Warzycha said “he rather win this crappy game, than play a good game and lose like what happens to the Crew in most cases”.

Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer preserved the lead in the 82nd minute with a diving stop after Nelson Gonzalez drove a free kick from 22 yards that was headed towards the left side netting.

Will Johson appeared to have scored on the ensuing scramble, but he was ruled offside on the play, nullifying the goal.

Hesmer made another key save in the 88th minute when he made a brilliant kick save after Robbie Findley broke free on a breakaway chance.

Schelotto’s decisive goal came after the Crew’s Robbie Rogers was taken down in the box by RSL’s Robbie Russell. The Argentine veteran powered the ensuing shot to the upper left hand corner past goalkeeper Nick Rimando for the only tally of the match.

The Crew remained unbeaten at 2-0-1 this season and avenged last year’s postseason loss to RSL last year, when the visitors won 3-2 in the second leg of the Eastern Conference semifinal series, stunning a Columbus team which had won the Supporters Shield for the second consecutive season. With the loss, Real Salt Lake is 1-3-1.
