Roberto Hernandez, formerly Fausto Carmona, wins first game since name change

It has been quite awhile since Roberto Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona had won a game on the mound.

Yesterday, for the Tampa Bay Rays, he pitched effectively for six innings, allowed one earned run, three hits, three walks and seven strikeouts in an 8-1 win over the Oakland Athletics.

The win was his first since becoming Roberto Hernandez and he is 1-3 to start the 2013 season.

The victory was also his since September 20, 2011 when he pitched for the Cleveland Indians.

The 32-year-old right-hander has changed his life after completing a work program. He was arrested in the Dominican Republic in January of 2012 on false-identity charges. The charges were later dropped.

Hernandez has a career record of 54-72 with an ERA of 4,64 and 592 strikeouts.

The Cleveland Indians don’t usually give players contract extensions.

The last one was given to the Fausto Carmona, who real name is Roberto Hernandez.

Reports out of Cleveland say that the team has reached an agreement with shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera for two years through the 2014 season.

Rumors have it that the contract is worth $16.5 million. Cabrera during the off-season had agreed to a one-year, $4.55 million deal to avoid the arbitration process.

The 26-year-old Cabrera is starting his fifth MLB season.

He would’ve been eligible for free agency after 2013.
