Kaymer wins Abu Dhabi Tourney; knocks Woods from 2nd place in rankings

Martin Kaymer won the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship by eight shots after shooting a 6-under-par 66 in the final round.

By winning the tournament, Kaymer takes over second-place from Tiger Woods in the world rankings.

Kaymer led by a five-shot lead going into the final round and had no challenges in winning his third title in four years in Abu Dhabi, finishing at 24-under-par 264.

Rory McIlroy finished second with a 69 in the final round, and Retief Goosen and Graeme McDowell were another two shots back in third place.

Ernie Els wins South African Open

Ernie Els won the PGA European Tour’s South African Open for a fifth time, shooting a 6-under-par 66 to beat Retief Goosen (66) by One shot in a tournament shortened to 17 holes for each of the final two rounds.

The third and fourth rounds were played Sunday without the par-3 fourth hole, where the green was water-logged and all of the players were given a par score.

Els had five birdies, an eagle and a bogey in the final round to finish at 25-under-par 257 in the rain-delayed tournament, where South Africans finished in the top four spots.

Golf majors winners line up to play in Nedbank Golf Challenge

The Nedbank Golf Challenge will be held in December in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The world of golf’s top players are lining up to play. Lee Westwood and major tournament winners Padraig Harrington, Louis Oosthuizen, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen.

Ryder Cup winners Miguel Angel Jimenez, Ross Fisher and Edoardo Molinari will be participating in the 12-player field for the $5 million invitational tournament at Sun City casino resort.

Defending champion Robert Allenby, Anders Hansen, Justin Rose and Tim Clark complete the entry list. $1.25 million will go to the winner.

The Nedbank celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2010. It has been dubbed ‘Africa’s major’, the tournament has increased its purse from $4.385 million in 2009, with the winner’s share rising by $1.2 million.

Jim Furyk takes lead at Tour Championship

Jim Furyk is one round of golf from the biggest payday of his career.

Furyk took the lead at the Tour Championship Saturday with a par 70, allowing him to lead by one-shot over Retief Goosen and Luke Donald going into the final round at East Lake Golf Club and the conclusion of the FedEx Cup.

At stake is the $10 million bonus which goes to the winner.

Geoff Ogilvy at 72 is 5 under-par.

Furyk was trailing most of the day until he started to turn things around on the par-5 15th hole. There, Furyk made a 10-foot birdie and Donald hit into a bunker and three putted for double bogey. Donald shot a 71.

Goosen  won the Tour Championship in 2004, back when winning was only worth $1.08 million.

Goosen with a 66 leads Bridgestone Invitational after 2nd round

AKRON, OHIO — Retief Goosen has been playing well all season long, but he has not won any tournaments.

After the first two rounds of the Bridgestone Invitational, he is in the driver’s seat.

Goosen shot a 4-under-par 66 during Friday’s second round to take a one-stroke lead over Phil Mickelson and Justin Leonard through the World Golf Championship at vernerable Firestone Country Club.

Goosen, currently stands at 7-under-par 133, is trying to hold off Mickelson who is trying to become number 1 in the world. If Lefty finishes in the top four, he’ll take the ranking from Tiger Woods who has had it for 5 1/2 years.
