CITY LEAGUE BASKETBALL: Much-improved South finally beats Walnut Ridge in South Division play, 60-50

The South Bulldogs would love to be champions of the City League division that bears its name.

The Bulldogs, under head coach Ramon Spears, a former assistant of the Bates brothers Michael at Africentric and Jason at Walnut Ridge, have made strides in just three years.

South has gone from one win all the way to 13 wins and currently third in the City South behind Eastmoor Academy and Africentric after Friday night’s 60-50 win over Walnut Ridge.

The key to the game was the Scots only scoring five points in the second quarter. Single-digit quarters have hampered the Scots all year.

Christopher Byrd and Aaron Mullins led the Bulldogs with 14 and 12 points respectively.

Rob Wheelwright led the Scots with 15.

South is 13-5, 7-5 while the Scots drop to 10-8, 6-6 good for fifth place in a division that they’ve dominated the past two years.

The Columbus South Boys basketball team has been making progress all season long even if their record ended up at 7-15.

Head coach Ramon Spears, a former assistant at Africentric & Walnut Ridge, has brought winning ways from those programs and is instilling them into his.

The Bulldogs are a young and dangerous team as Division II top-seeded Jonathan Alder found out on Saturday night at Heath High School.

The final score was 46-43 with Alex Randall making the first of two foul shots with four seconds to go to seal the win.

South had a chance to tie at 46 but Aaron Mullins’ half-court shot hit the rim and fell off.

Oumar Diop. a Whitehall transfer led South with 13 points.

Alder, now 20-1, won the game at the free throw line going 18 of 25. Randall scored  12 points, Eric Roby added 12 and Nate Squires put in 11 points.

HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE: East hangs on to beat South, 63-59 in City League crossover game

In our Tuesday night edition of HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE, we had a City League crossover game between, the South Bulldogs of the South Division at the East Tigers of the North Division.

The Tigers held on with a 63-59 escape over South.

Darius White scored 21 points to lead the way followed by James Davis with 18 as host East improves to 8-12 on the season.

South drops to 6-14 on the season. Quite an improvement in 2012. Last year at this time the Bulldogs were winless heading into the OHSAA playoffs. Ramon Spears, their head coach is doing a solid job.

The game marked Senior night for the East team. The home crowd honored the four-year players with a thanks for the memories reflection with the program. Leaving after the season will be Torre’ Smith, White, David Dorsey and Hasan Strothers-Harris.

The visiting Bulldogs started slowly, while the Tigers led 17-10 after one quarter, with White leading the way with seven points.

One of the reasons that East controlled the first half of play and led at the half, 30-22, was that they held South center, 6’8 Ellis Williams scoreless and he had to leave the game early with two quick fouls. With Williams out of the game, Davis scored six points in the second quarter.

The pace of the game picked up in the 3rd quarter as South got Williams back in the game and involved in the offense with eight points, but they trailed by 14 at 42-28. But South cut the lead down to only 4 points with a 14-4 run to end the third quarter trailing 46-42.

In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs took control and led by four at 55-51 on two Deone Lindsay free throws with 3:24 to go in regulation.

From that point on the East Tigers used their press and drives to the basket to get fouled and won the game at the free throw line.

The Buckeye Muffler & Brake Shop Player of the Game was East High senior White.

An interesting twist to this game is that both schools are in Division II and in the upcoming OHSAA tournament, the two teams will play each other at Dublin Scioto on Wednesday, February 22 at 7:45 pm.
