As expected, former Ohio State defensive lineman Cameron Heyward was selected 31st overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday night in the 2011 NFL Draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Heyward is the 69th Buckeye overall to be drafted in the first round and the 17th since 2000, the second most among FBS schools during that time. He also is the 74th Buckeyes to be drafted overall since 2000, the most among any FBS school. He is the 14th first-round pick in the Jim Tressel era.

Rounds 2-3 continue Friday evening beginning at 6 p.m. ET while rounds 4-7 will take place Saturday beginning at noon.

Heyward was a Playboy All-American, a Lombardi Award semifinalist and a Lott Trophy quarterfinalist in 2010. A first team all-Big Ten selection by both coaches and the media in 2010, Heyward started 46 career games, totaling 163 tackles, 37.5 TFL and 15.5 sacks.

At the Ohio State football banquet in December, Heyward was awarded the Bill Willis Trophy from the coaches as the team’s outstanding defensive player in helping the Buckeyes defense rank among the national leaders in several stat categories.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

compiled from staff and wire reports

The NFL recently released that more than 45 million viewers watched a portion of the 2010 Draft on three television channels, without a doubt, a record.

A total viewership of 45.4 million tuned in to the 75th draft on the NFL Network, ESPN AND ESPN2. Those numbers show a 16 percent jump from the 2009 Draft record of 39 million, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Draft viewership has nearly doubled during the past decase, from 23.5 million in 2001.

For the first three sessions of the draft, a record crowd of 12,275 fans were in attendance at Radio City Music Hall.

Also, NFL and union officials have discussed adding two more regular season games when they met for the first negotiating session since February.

The new plan is to have teams play two exhibition games and 18 regular-season games instead of the current four exhibitions and 16 regular-season games.
