The Edmonton Oilers selected forward Taylor Hall with the number 1 pick in the NHL draft over the weekend, ending a yearlong debate about the who were the two best 18-year-old’s in hockey at the present time.

The NHL’s worst team, the Oilers, chose Hall over fellow OHL (Ontario Hockey League) forward Tyler Seguin on Friday night, making the toughest of allĀ  selections at the start of the draft in years. Edmonton’s management and general manager Steve Tambellini said they didn’t make the final decision until mid-day on Friday.

Hall will playing for a rebuilding team in Edmonton, while Boston, a playoff-caliber team were waiting to grab Seguin and did with the number 2 pick.

Edmonton likes Hall because of his physical gifts and work ethic to be a mainstay for years on a club that has lacked an elite front-line talent since trading away Ryan Smythe three years ago.

Many National Hockey League scouts and executives couldn’t chose a favorite between Hall, a physical left winger who scored 106 points in 57 games for the Windsor Spitfires, and Seguin, a smooth-as-silk skating center from the Plymouth Whalers. Seguin was the league MVP last season, and Hall was the playoff MVP while leading the Spitfires to their second straight Memorial Cup title.
