Penguins beats Columbus again; Malkin leads way (Saturday)

The Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Columbus Blue Jackets for the second night in a row, 3-1 Saturday night in exhibition play. Evgeni Malkin scored his first goal of the preseason.

The Penguins beat the Blue Jackets on Friday in Columbus, 5-4.

Malkin deflected a puck past Columbus goalie Steve Mason at 2:47 of the third period to give Pittsburgh it’s first lead of the game.

Pittsburgh, now 3-0, also received goals from Arron Asham and Pascal Dupuis.

The Penguins put their top two centers, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on the same line; the number one group for most of the game.

Marc-Andre Fluery was the winning goaltender for Pittsburgh, finishing with 32 saves. Steve Mason stopped 25 saves for Columbus.

Blue Jackets defenseman Michael Ratchuck scored the only goal on a backhand shot.

Pittsburgh comes from behind to beat Columbus, 5-4 (Friday)

Chris Kunitz scored a goal and added an assist as the Pittsburgh Penguins scored twice in the third period to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-4 in a preseason game Friday night at Nationwide Arena in downtown Columbus.

The Penguins played without their top two players, Sidney Crosby (sore hip flexor) and Evgeni Malkin (scratch).

Kunitz was given credit for the goal after the puck caromed off of two Columbus players on the power play late in the second period.

Nick Johnson scored between the circles on a power play for the winning goal at 8:13 of the third, and Mike Comrie made it 5-3 about 4 minutes later with a tap-in goal, finishing off a nice passing play.

The 2-0 Penguins also received scoring from Arron Asham and Mike Rupp.

Kristian Huselius had 3 assists all on  Tomas Kubalik’s three goals. Kyle Wilson also scored for the Blue Jackets who fall to 1-2.

Pittsburgh’s goalie, Brent Johnson allowed three goals on 21 shots, playing the first two periods. The Blue Jackets’ goaltender Mathieu Garon played the entire game and made 24 saves.

Blue Jackets cut six players from training camp roster

The Columbus Blue Jackets have made their first roster moves of training camp on Friday September 24, returning four draft picks to their respective junior clubs and releasing two players from their tryout contracts, Executive Vice President and General Manager Scott Howson announced.  The current training camp roster consists of 53 players.

The four Blue Jackets draft picks who were returned to their junior clubs include: forwards Dalton Smith (Ottawa, Ontario Hockey League) and Petr Straka (Rimouski, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) and defensemen Brandon Archibald (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Hockey League) and Austin Madaisky (Kamloops, Western Hockey League).

Additionally, the team released goaltenders Riley Gill and Dan Taylor.

Columbus continues its preseason action Friday night when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Game time from Nationwide Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET. The game can be heard on The Fan at 1460 AM and online at

Pittsburgh and Calgary next in line for outdoor games

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Calgary Flames will be playing outdoor games next season.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced Friday from the Stanley Cup press conferences in Chicago that the Penguins will host the Washington Capitals at Heinz Field on New Year’s Day, the fourth game of the annual Winter Classic.

Sidney Crosby and the Penguins played Buffalo in the first game of the Classic. Two seasons ago, the Chicago Blackhawks hosted the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field. Last season, the Boston Bruins hosted the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park.

Bettman also announced that Calgary is expected to host the Montreal Canadiens at McMahon Stadium on February 20. Montreal played the Oilers in Edmonton in the 2003 Heritage Classic, the league’s first outdoor regular-season game.

Pascal Dupuis (nhl)

Pascal Dupuis scored 9:56 into overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 4-3 comeback win over the Ottawa Senators that secured a 4-2 series win and a place in the second round of the NHL playoffs.

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 28 shots as the Penguins won for the eighth time in nine playoff series, with the only loss in that stretch being to Ottawa in the first round in 2007.

Joe Pavelski (nhl)

In Denver, San Jose also made their way to round two by beating Colorado in Game 6.

Joe Pavelski scored two goals, including the tiebreaker midway through the third period.

Evgeni Nabokov was steady in net for the sharks all night stopping just 16 shots in the 5-2 win.

Patrick Kane (nhl)

In Chicago, Patrick Kane tied the game with just 13.6 seconds left and Marian Hossa scored the overtime winner as Chicago beat Nashville to take a 3-2 series lead.

the Blackhawks blew a 3-1 lead, and the Predators went ahead 4-3 with two third-period goals by Martin Erat.


Ilya Brzgalov (nhl)

The Phoenix Coyotes scored their first three goals on special teams and Ilya Bryzgalov made 31 saves in a 5-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings that will force game 7.

Jimmy Howard made 24 saves for the Red Wings.

Daniel Sedin (nhl)

Daniel Sedin scored with 2:03 to play, and Vancouver rallied from another third period deficit to finish off its first round series against Los Angeles with a victory in Game 6. The game was played in LA.
