2014-15 Blue Jackets ready for another NHL Playoff run with yet another young team

The Columbus Blue Jackets have come a long way from the days of depending on superstar Rick Nash to carry them.

The past two seasons without Nash, the team has posted winning records of 24-17-7 for 55 points in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season where Blue Jackets just missed the playoffs via a tiebreaker against the Minnesota Wild, who had more non-shootout wins.  To 43-32-7 for 93 points and the playoffs in 2013-14.

The team has relied on several players to lead them to their winning ways: G Sergei Bobrovsky, F Artem Anisimov, F Cam Atkinson, F Matt Calvert, F Brandon Dubinsky, F Nick Foligno, F Boone Jenner, F Ryan Johansen and F Mark Letestu. On defense, the leaders include Jack Johnson, Ryan Murray, Dalton Prout, David Savard, Fedor Tyutin and James Wisniewski. So the days of relying on one superstar player is done and over with.

However, on the eve of training camp last week, the team was told by Johansen and his agent that they did not like the contract offers that were extended by the Blue Jackets. The Jackets have offered Johansen more money than what other top players are getting at his position.

The Blue Jackets organization is loaded with young talent. This year’s team may see some younger players added to the roster.

The winning ways started to happen when the CBJ signed  John Davidson and Jarmo Kekalainen who both had worked for the arch-rival St. Louis Blues to run the Hockey Operations as President and GM respectively.

Both Davidson and Kekalainen talked about the upcoming season of Blue Jackets hockey.

The NFL Draft could be coming to a city near you

The National Football League usually has its annual draft in New York City.

But the league is currently inviting cities to put up bids to see who is interested in hosting the event.

This week, the NFL invited Chicago, Los Angeles and New York to make their presentations to host, but no one emerged as the front-runner.

It has been reported that more than a dozen cities have shown interest in being a host in 2015. They include: Boston, Canton, Cleveland, Green Bay, Houston, Nashville, New Orleans, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

The NFL says it’ll chose a site sometime this summer.

New Carolina Hurricanes GM Ron Francis wasting no time in cleaning house for a “fresh start”

Ron Francis was one of the NHL’s best centers during his career which lasted form 1981-2004. He was used to winning and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007 after playing for the Hartford Whalers, Pittsburgh, Carolina and Toronto.

It has come to no one’s surprise to Carolina Hurricanes fans and media in North Carolina that he has started cleaning house after taking over as the general manager last week from Jim Rutherford who resigned after two decades.

The Hurricanes former captain and assistant coach fired head coach Kirk Muller and most of his staff. Muller was 80-80-27 with the Hurricanes. Also shown the door were assistant coaches Dave Lewis and John MacLean. Goaltending coach Greg Stefan has been reassigned to the team’s pro scouting department.

Francis, who was an imposing center during his playing days at 6’3, 200 pounds, said that no one’s job is safe on the team not even the most-popular stars. He also stated that a fresh start is needed for a franchise who has made the Stanley Cup playoffs only once in the past eight years.

The Hurricanes have won a Stanley Cup, in 2005-2006. They’ve won two Eastern Conference championships in 2001-02 and 2005-06.
