Columbus West High School grad and former Ohio State star Michael Redd scored 17 points in his first start in more than two years, leading the Phoenix Suns over the slumping Charlotte Bobcats, 95-89 over the weekend.

The Bobcats have lost 11 games in a row and 11 straight on the road and has not won a game since January 14 against the Golden State Warriors.

Prior to the Charlotte game, Redd had not started a game since January 20,2010, against the Los Angeles Lakers when he was a member of the Milwaukee Bucks, and had only played just 28 games over the previous two years due to injuries in his left knee.

Starting in place of Jared Dudley who was out with a thigh bruise, Redd made 6 of 12 field goals, 4 of 7 from three-pointers. He has appeared in 10 games with the Suns since signing a one-year contract on December 29.

Phoenix Suns coach Gentry has contract extended through 2013

Phoenix Suns coach Alvin Gentry, who established using five players off his bench together for long periods of games and made then play scrappy defense, unheard of in the NBA, has been rewarded.

The Suns management has extended Gentry’s contract through the 2012-2013 season.

It is basically a one-year extension  as the Suns used the option several months ago on his previous deal which ran through the 2011-2012 season.

Alvin Gentry (NBA)

In his first full season as coach in 2009-2010, Gentry guided the Suns to a shocking third-best record in the tough Western Conference at 54-28. Phoenix advanced to the conference finals before losing to the eventual NBA champion LA Lakers.

Gentry was promoted to head coach when Terry Porter was fired during the All-Star break in the 2008-2009 season.

Under the 55-year-old’s guidance, Phoenix has a record of 72-41 and 46-12 at home.
