NHL NEWS: Doan, Thornton earn milestones

Shane Doan scored a power-play goal in overtime to help the red-hot Phoenix Coyotes past the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2.

The win was the eighth in a row for the Coyotes.

Doan was playing in his 1,098th game with Winnipeg/Phoenix franchise, tying him with Teppo Numminen for first on the all-time franchise list.

San Jose Sharks Joe Thornton scored his 300th career goal in the team’s win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Rookie Meram scores twice in Crew exhibition loss

Rookie draft choice Justin Meram scored two goals, but the Crew lost to the Houston Dynamo 4-2 in a very-physical, 120-minute exhibition in Phoenix.

Crew forward Andres Mendoza was ejected in the 18th minute, and two Dynamo players were issued red cards.

Before the game, Meram and fellow SuperDraft picks Rich Balchan, Cole Grossman and Bernardo Anor were signed to contracts.

The Crew have returned from Arizona and are preparing for a Champions League quarterfinal against Real Salt Lake on Tuesday, February 22 at Crew Stadium.

Columbus activate Ethan Moreau from injured reserve

The Columbus Blue Jackets have activated left wing Ethan Moreau off injured reserve.

Moreau missed the past 16 games after suffering an injury at Phoenix on January 4. He is available for the tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Kings at Nationwide Arena.

The 35-year-old Moreau scored one goal and four assists for five points in 23 games with Columbus this season. The Huntsville, Ontario native was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jackets from Edmonton on June 30, 2010. In 886 career NHL games, he has collected 282 points on 146 goals and 136 assists with Chicago, Edmonton and Columbus.

Expansion Whitecaps beat Crew in Arizona, 2-1

Eddie Gaven scored the Columbus Crew’s only goal in a 2-1 exhibition loss to the MLS’ newest team, the Vancouver Whitecaps, 2-1 in Phoenix.

Gaven’s goal tied the score at 1 after drawing a penalty in the second half. He later left the game in the 89th minute with an ankle injury.

Abita Harris and Omar Salgado scored second half goals for Vancouver.

Wright State wins at Green Bay on Evans layup with four seconds left

Down by six points with two minutes to go, Wright State scored the final eight points of the game, including N’Gai Evans layup with 4.3 seconds remaining as the Raiders rallied for a 63-61 Horizon League win at Green Bay.

The Phoenix had one last chance, but Rahmon Fletcher missed a three attempt as time expired.

The Raiders made 14 of 25 shots over the final 20 minutes, including four of eight from behind the 3-point line, to finish at 45 percvent overall while Green Bay was at 50 percent, but just three of 10 from three. Wright State led 18-13 in points off of turnovers and 8-5 in second-chance points.

Vaughn Duggins paced all scorers with 19 points while Cole Darling had a season-high 12 points along with six rebounds for the Raiders.

The Raiders move over 14-8, 7-3.

Alec Brown and Fletcher each had 12 for Green Bay who are 11-11, 5-6.
