Steve Kerr hired to coach Golden State Warriors

It had been rumored for weeks by the so-called NBA experts in the media, that when Phil Jackson took over as team president of the New York Knicks that he would hire Steve Kerr.

To some it seemed far-fetched that Jackson would actually hire Kerr, who has never been an NBA head coach, to lead the Knicks.

While Jackson was still deciding on who he would hire, Kerr was also negotiating with the Golden State Warriors.

As it turned out, the Warriors out-bid the Knicks and have hired Kerr away from his job as a TNT broadcaster to replace Mark Jackson as their head coach.

Kerr, according to his agent, will be paid $25 million dollars on a five-year deal.

The 48-year-old Kerr was born in Beirut, Lebanon while his dad, Malcolm was engaged in higher learning and research in the Middle East.

The former point guard played his college basketball at the University of Arizona for Lute Olson and his teammates included Sean Elliott, Tom Tolbert and Kenny Lofton.

As an NBA player, the 6’3, 175-pounder played for Phoenix, Cleveland, Orlando, Chicago, San Antonio twice and Portland. He scored 5,437 points and 1,658 assists. He won five NBA Championships.

Knicks give Woodson head coaching job permanently with extension

There had been talk that eventhough Mike Woodson had done such a good job of turning the New York Knicks around and got them into the playoffs, the management wanted to go after Phil Jackson.

After all, Jackson is a former Knicks player and was a member of several of their greatest teams in franchise history.

But all that speculation is done and over with as the Knicks on Friday decided to keep Woodson, the former Indiana University basketball star.

New York removed the interim coach tag and gave Woodson a multiyear contract extension. It was a reward for turning around a turbulent season into a playoff participant.

Woodson took over on March 14, replacing Mike D’Antoni and led the Knicks to an 18-6 record.

They lost to the Miami Heat 4 game to 1 in the first round of the playoffs. That one win snapped an NBA-record, 13-game postseason losing streak since 2001.

Former Cavs coach Brown hired to lead Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers have found the right man to replace the retiring Phil Jackson.

He is former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Mike Brown.

According to news reports, Brown will be given a four-year deal worth $18 million.

Brown will become the Lakers 22nd head coach. He’ll be taking over one the NBA’s most-storied franchises who’ve won 16 titles, second to the Boston Celtics.

Brown accomplished everything with the Cavaliers but win the NBA title. He led the team to the 2007 NBA Finals and had a record of 272-138 in five years and became the most successful coach in franchise history. Two of his teams had the league’s overall-best record.

The 2009 NBA Coach of the Year was fired last spring by the Cavaliers after they were surprisingly eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the postseason.

Byron Scott is the Cavaliers new coach

compiled from staff, wire, Cleveland Cavaliers and NBA news

Byron Scott felt he didn’t want to wait any longer to get a new heading  in the NBA. With or without LeBron James, he’ll coach the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Scott accepted the Cavs job and hopes that with him being the best coach available, will convince the two-time MVP to stay home and try to win a title.

Scott, who previously coached in New Jersey and New Orleans, will not know for awhile if James will come back or not. But the 49-year-old former NBA star, was ready to take a chance.

Cleveland has been looking for a coach since Mike Brown was fired May 24, ending his five-year reign with the club. Brown guided James and his teammates through the most successful run in franchise history, but fell short of winning a championship.

Scott for years has said his dream job was to coach the Los Angeles Lakers, but with Phil Jackson returning for next season, he decided to take on the Cavs, who now are in a better position to re-sign LeBron James with Scott on the sideline. Scott’s resume’ is exactly the kind of experience that James told owner Dan Gilbert that he and his teammates need to become NBA championships.

James said that he wanted to play for a former NBA player, and Scott’s resume includes 14 seasons, 11 with the Lakers, and 3 NBA titles. He was a teammate of Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on those “Showboat and Showtime” teams under Pat Riley and later with Kobe Bryant. He knows what it takes to win it all.

As a coach, Byron Scott has led lesser-talented teams like the Nets to the finals. In New Orleans, he took the Hornets on a surprising and miraculous run to the Western Conference finals. He coached Chris Paul in New Orleans and still has a good relationship, with Paul who is LeBron James’ best friend.

Lakers win as expected; rally past Boston in Game 7, 83-79

compiled from staff, wire and NBA news

The Los Angeles Lakers have won their 16th NBA championship after a gritty and well-earned 83-79 victory over the arch-rival Boston Celtics.

The Lakers and Phil Jackson have put themselves deeper into history in the NBA record books.

Ron Artest had 20 points and Pau Gasol added 19 points and 18 rebounds in the win.

Paul Pierce had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Celtics, who just couldn’t finish the final quarter of a remarkable playoff run after a fourth-place finish in the Eastern Conference. Kevin Garnett added 17 points and Rasheed Wallace had 11.

The Lakers will hold a parade on Monday, with the team riding floats from the Staples Center down Figueroa Street to the USC campus in downtown Los Angeles. The rally in 2009 at the LA Coliseum drew 95,000 fans, but Lakers officials are in favor of a more interactive celebration.

Home teams improved to 14-3 in Game 7 of the finals. No road team has won a title in Game 7 since 1978.
