Sampras wins Champions Series event in Arizona

Pete Sampras won the CTCA Championships over the weekend for his third Champions Series win of 2011, beating Jim Courier 8-7 (4).

Sampras advanced to the finals with a 6-3 win over Michael Chang, while Courier bested Mats Wilander 6-3 in the first semifinals.

Sampras increased his lead in the Champions Series standings to 300 points over Courier after the sixth event.

The Tour has 12 events scheduled.

Now 40 years old, Sampras played on the ATP Tour from 1988-2002. He won 64 career titles, achieved #1 in April 1993 and was elected into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2007.

MSG tennis exhibition featuring Federer-Roddick scheduled for March 5

Roger Federer and Andy Roddick are taking their long-time rivalry to Madison Square Garden.

The two have played each other 22 times and in four Grand Slam finals.

Federer owns a record 16 Grand Slam titles, and is 20-2 all-time vs. Roddick, which includes 4-0 in major tournament finals.

The two ATP Tour stars will play a best-of-three sets match as part of the annual BNP Paribas Showdown exhibition March 5, which will also have Maria Sharapova against women’s #1 player, Caroline Wozniacki.

Roddick has never played a match at the home of the NBA’s New York Knicks and NHL’s New York Rangers but Federer has and it was against Pete Sampras in a 2008 exhibition match.

Outback Tennis Champions Series being redesigned for 2011

The Tennis Champions Series is being redesigned for the over-30-years-old players.

The tour’s schedule consists of one-night stops in 12 series over five weeks, starting September 22 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The participants include Jim Courier, Bjorn Borg, Mats Wilander, Michael Chang, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and John McEnroe.

Moya retires from ATP Tour

They say that after awhile, the game of tennis takes a toll on the players body as they reach the age of 30.

Former French Open champion Carlos Moya, who is 34, retired recently because of a nagging foot injury.

The Moya played 15 years on the ATP Tour, but the past four have been spent with several injuries.

Moya won 20 ATP titles, including the 1998 French Open. He lost to Pete Sampras in the 1997 Australian Open final. His last victory came in Croatia in 2007.

Tennis star Roger Federer ties Sampras’ career titles mark

Roger Federer beat Florian Mayer of Germany 6-4, 6-3 to win the Stockholm Open and tie Pete Sampras’ total of 64 career titles.

Since 1968, only three players have won more singles tournaments than Federer and Sampras. They include: Jimmy Connors (109), Ivan Lendl (94) and John McEnroe with 77.
