Clippers nip Tides in 10 innings, 6-5

Columbus Clippers shortstop Cord Phelps always comes up with the big hits.

Phelps capped off a huge series against the Norfolk Tides in Virginia, by coming through with an game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning Sunday to give the Clippers a 6-5 win.

In the 10th inning, Paul Phillips drew a leadoff walk off Mark Worrell (0-2). Luis Valbuena sacrificed him to second base. Kyle Smith was put into the game to pinch-run for Phillips and scored on Phelps’ two-out single.

Phelps drove in three runs in the game and a total of nine for the series.

The series saw three of the four games go extra innings.

Joe Martinez (4-1) was the winner and Josh Judy picked up save number seven.

Clippers go 10 innings to win at Norfolk

The Columbus Clippers took their winning ways on the road Thursday night and beat the Norfolk Tides in 10 innings, 5-1.

Paul Phillips knocked in the go-ahead run with a single. Cord Phelps followed with a bases clearing double to highlight a four-run inning.

Lonnie Chisenhall belted a sixth inning solo homer for the Clippers only run before the tenth inning outburst.

Zach Putnam earned the win with two scoreless innings and Josh Judy closed the game out in the tenth.

Clippers streak is 10 with 6-0 blanking of Charlotte

The Clippers 10th win in a row has to go down to clutch, two-out hitting.

Saturday night, Columbus blanked Charlotte 6-0.

Starter Joe Martinez earned the win pitching five innings and striking out five. Carlton Smith came out of the bullpen for two innings of relief and struck out three. Eric Berger relieved Smith and struck out the side in the both the eighth and ninth innings.

Paul Phillips went 3-5 in the game and scored two runs. Phillips lost a home run as the umpires overruled a home run of his in the sixth inning and he was credited with a ground rule double.

Cleveland Indians ink Phillips to minor league deal

The Cleveland Indians have signed free-agent catcher Paul Phillips to a minor-league contract.

The deal includes an invitation to attend Spring Training with the big league team.

The 33-year-old Phillips, has a career .262 average and .298 on-base percentage over 91 games in the big leagues. The catcher has had stints with Kansas City, Chicago White Sox and Colorado in parts of seven seasons.

In 2010, Phillips batted .217 in 12 games with Colorado. He appeared in 34 games for Triple-A Colorado Springs, hitting 238 with 10 RBI’s in those games.

Cleveland has two catchers on the Major League roster, Carlos Santana and Lou Marson and Luke Carlin on the Minor League level.
