Jack Del Rio knew the stakes when he went to training camp this season with his Jacksonville Jaguars. His job security became week-to-week once two things occured: 1) when he cut veteran quarterback David Garrard to go with rookie Blaine Gabbert and 2) when owner Wayne Weaver said he needed to make the playoffs to keep his job for a 10th season.

At 3-8 this season, Weaver fired Del Rio. He leaves the North Florida city with a 69-73 record, including 1-2 in two playoff berths. The Jaguars were not able to win the NFL’s AFC South in any of his nine seasons. The division also has Indianapolis, Houston and Tennessee.

Weaver also announced that he was selling the franchise to Illinois businessman Shadid Khan, who was born in Pakistan and is the owner of Flex-N-Gate bumper systems company.

The franchise, born in 1993, is worth $760 million according to Forbes magazine.

The 77-year-old Weaver named defensive coordinator Mel Tucker the interim head coach and gave general manager Gene Smith a three-year contract extension. Smith will head the coaching search.

The 61-year-old Khan’s purchase of the team is subject to NFL approval. League owners will be voting on December 14. If it is approved, the sale will become official January 4.
