Golf majors winners line up to play in Nedbank Golf Challenge

The Nedbank Golf Challenge will be held in December in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The world of golf’s top players are lining up to play. Lee Westwood and major tournament winners Padraig Harrington, Louis Oosthuizen, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen.

Ryder Cup winners Miguel Angel Jimenez, Ross Fisher and Edoardo Molinari will be participating in the 12-player field for the $5 million invitational tournament at Sun City casino resort.

Defending champion Robert Allenby, Anders Hansen, Justin Rose and Tim Clark complete the entry list. $1.25 million will go to the winner.

The Nedbank celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2010. It has been dubbed ‘Africa’s major’, the tournament has increased its purse from $4.385 million in 2009, with the winner’s share rising by $1.2 million.

Harrington’s late eagles leads tourney in Malaysia

Padraig Harrington of Ireland had two eagles on the last three holes to shoot an 8-under-par 64 Thursday to take the first-round lead at the Iskandar Johor Open.

Harrington opened his round with three straight birdies. He finished with eagles on the 16th and 18th to tie Marcus Both of Australia and Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand at the Asian Tour event in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

Harrington drove the green on the par-4, 314-yard 16th hole and sank an 18-foot eagle putt. He then made a 25-footer at the par-5, 18th despite gusty wins that the players had to contend with all afternoon.

European Tour: Sandelin leads France tournament

Jarmo Sandelin of Sweden shot a 6-under-par 66 on Golf de Joyvenal’s Retz Course in Chambourcy, France.

Sandelin has a share of the second round lead in the Vivendi Cup with England’s John Parry, while Padraig Harrington barely made the cut by one shot.

Paul Casey proving he should be on Europe’s Ryder Cup team; tied at Tour Championship

Golfer Paul Casey feels that European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie should’ve picked him for the team.

Casey hot a 4-under-par 66 Thusday for a share of the lead with Geoff Ogilvy and Luke Donald after the opening round of the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

Casey has broken 70, seven times since he was passed over for the Ryder Cup team as Montgomerie chose Luke Donald, Padraig Harrington and Edoardo Molinari as captain’s picks.

Tiger Woods will defend Bridgestone title in Akron


Tiger Woods has entered the Bridgestone Invitational next week at Firestone, where he is the defending champion and a seven-time winner of the World Golf Championship.

Woods won in 2009 by rallying past Padraig Harrington, becoming the first player to win a PGA Tour event seven times on the same golf course.

Woods has won every year at the Firestone Country Club since 2005, except for when he missed the second half of the 2008 season following knee surgery.

Also entering the tournament is Anthony Kim. This will be his first tournament since having thumb surgery in May.

The Bridgestone Invitational, which starts on August 5, is a week before the final golf major championship of the year, the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.
