Guerrero asks, gets release from minor league contract with Blue Jays

Vladimir Guerrero is trying to get back to the major leagues and was playing well at Triple-A with the Las Vegas 51′s of the Pacific Coast League.

The veteran outfielder/DH was hitting .303 in eight games.

But the 37-year-old pulled a shocker. He asked for and received his release by the Toronto Blue Jays.

There was no word to why the nine-time All-Star who has played for Montreal, the LA Angels, Texas and Baltimore, on why he wanted to be released.

There is no doubt that Guerrero can still hit. In 2010, he hit .290 in 145 games with the Orioles.

Clippers win Governors’ Cup as IL champions again; tops Lehigh Valley 3 games to 1

The Columbus Clippers have proven for the second year in a row that they are the kingpins in the International League.

The team was the 2010 IL champions and the National champions of Minor League Baseball.

In 2011, the Clippers beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 4-1 in the deciding game in Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania to wrap up its second straight Governors’ Cup title, 3 games to 1 and a return trip to the Triple-A national championship game to play the Pacific Coast League winner in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Tuesday.

The architect of this domination is the parent Cleveland Indians, but the man steering the ship is manager Mike Sarbaugh, who also was a good manager while running the Double-A Akron Aeros.

The Clippers won an IL-best 88 games in the regular season despite overcoming 183 player moves involving them, Cleveland and Akron. They won the IL West Division by 12 gaves over the Indianapolis Indians. They beat Durham and Lehigh Valley, two quality teams in the IL playoffs. It goes to show everybody that the Indians farm system is loaded with talent.

Winning the decisive game, was pitcher Paolo Espino, who pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and one run, a homer by Brandon Moss, and struck out five. His pitching followed the strong starts of fellow hurlers Mitch Talbot and Joe Martinez in games 2 and 3 respectively.

Three in a row for the International League All-Stars

The International League is starting to build up a dynasty over the Pacific Coast League in Triple-A baseball.

The IL has won the past three All-Star Games and the past two Triple-A National Championship Games.

On Wednesday night in Salt Lake City, Utah, Tampa Bay prospect Russ Canzler hit a three-run homer in the second inning to lead the IL over the PCL, 3-0.

The IL’s pitching was dominant, allowing only 3 hits.

Cleveland Indians prospect and Columbus Clippers pitcher Zach McAllister led the IL pitching prospect by pitching two strong innings, striking out two and allowing only one hit.

Columbus Clippers manager Mike Sarbaugh was the manager of the International League.

Clippers’ Sarbaugh leads IL All-Stars against PCL tonight in Utah

Columbus Clippers manager Mike Sarbaugh will be leading the International League All-Stars against the Pacific Coast League All-Stars for the 2011 Triple-A All-Star Game.

The game, presented by Zions Bank and Workers Compensation Fund, will air live on the MLB Network TONIGHT, Wednesday, July 13 from Spring Mobile Ballpark in Salt Lake City, Utah, home of the PCL’s Salt Lake Bees.

The 44-year-old Sarbaugh, was named the 2010 Manager of the Year by Baseball America after he guided the Columbus Clippers to an IL title and Triple-A National Championship in his first season as a manager at the Triple-A level.

Sarbaugh is in his 22nd year in the Cleveland Indians organization, which includes five as a player, nine as a hitting coach and eight as a manager.

The Pennsylvania native has led four teams to their respective league’s championship as a manager.

64-year-old Dean Treanor, manager of the Indianapolis Indians and 52-year-old Richard Dotson, pitching coach for the Charlotte Knights will assist Sarbaugh with the IL stars.

Portland Beavers of Triple-A moving to Arizona

The Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League have announced that they are leaving for a new home in Tucson, Arizona.

San Diego Padres owner Jeff Moorad is heading a group that is buying the Triple-A team.

The Beavers will play in Tucson for at least the 2011 season.

Moorad and his group of investors, in the future wants to move the Padres’ top minor league affiliate north of San Diego to Escondido if a deal for a ballpark can be agreed upon.

The purchase must be approved by the PCL and Minor League Baseball.
