ESPN has agreed to pay an average of $80 million a year to broadcast the Rose Bowl game from 2015 through 2026. The agreement was reported by the Sports Business Journal.

The current deal is a payout of $30 million and the jump to $80 million is an increase of 167 percent.

The Pac-12 and the Big Ten will be able to keep all media revenue from the game, except in the years where the Rose Bowl hosts a national championship semifinal game. During those years, the revenue will be distributed to all Football Bowl Subdivision conferences.

The December 31 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl will have 6-7 UCLA against 6-6 Illinois in San Francisco on ESPN.

The two teams had disappointing seasons despite getting off to good starts. Both have one thing in common, they beat Arizona State; the Illini by three points and the Bruins by a single point.

The original head coaches were fired on back-to-back days. Ron Zook was fired by Illinois on November 27 and Rick Neuheisel was fired on November 28, but was allowed to coach in the Pac-12 title game.

The game will feature two interim head coaches, defensive coordinator Vic Koenning for Illinois and Mike Johnson, UCLA’s offensive coordinator.

Illinois’ offense which let the team down in its slide from 6-0 to 6-6. The Illini defense held them in most games, keeping opponents to 28 points or fewer, that kept the team in most games. Illinois was seventh in total defense.

UCLA’s problem was defense as it was outscored 130-37 in its final three losses.

The Pac-12 Conference already had a 12-year television contract worth around $3 billion with Fox and ESPN. Was that enough? No!

The Pac-12 announced a few days ago that it will be launching  national and regional television networks in 2012.

Commissioner Larry Scott says that his conference has partnered with cable companies Bright House, Comcast, Cox and Time Warner. There will be a national network along with six regional channels in Washington, Oregon, Northern California, Southern California, Arizona and the Mountain states.

The network will launch in August 2012 and subscribers will be able to watch games on mobile devices.

Every football and basketball game will be televised nationally. The higher-profile games will be on Fox and ESPN.

Big Ten allows Nebraska to keep tradition of playing day after Thanksgiving

Tom Osborne pleased that Big Ten honors Nebraska tradition of playing after Thanksgiving (courtesy of Nebraska athletics)

For years, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have played a football game the day after Thanksgiving.

From now on, they’ll be playing against a Big Ten opponent.

Iowa and Nebraska will play on the Friday after Thanksgiving in each of the next two seasons.

The two schools announced on Monday that they’ll play November 25 in Lincoln and In Iowa City on November 23, 2012.

The Cornhuskers will leave the Big 12 for the Big 10 after this school year ends in June.

Nebraska playing on Thanksgiving or the next day, started in the 1960′s playing their arch-rivals, the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Huskies had been playing Colorado, on the Friday after Thanksgiving every season since 1996.

Just like Nebraska, Colorado is leaving the Big 12 for the Pac-12.
