OHIO STATE AT MIAMI (FL) GAMEWEEK: Hurricanes led by new coach Al Golden

The Miami Hurricanes have a new head coach on the sidelines for 2011.

He is Al Golden, who’ll be making his Sun Life Stadium debut Saturday night (tonight) when leads Miami against Ohio State.

Golden has an overall record of 27-35 and has been a head coach for six years.

Golden arrived in Coral Gables, Florida, after spending the past five seasons as the head coach at Temple University in Philadelphia. With Owls, Golden took the program to lofty heights never seen before.

Before his arrival in Philly, Temple had just two winning seasons over its previous 26 years and won only 22 percent of its games over the previous 30 years.

Without hesitation, Golden made the Owls a conference champion and bowl contender, leading the program to a 17-8 record in his last two seasons there.

The 2009 season saw Temple compile it’s first winning season since 1990, and Coach Golden was honored with the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year award.

Dayton & Wright State lose weekend games

Ramone Moore scored 26 points to lead Temple (19-5, 9-2) over Dayton (17-9, 5-6), 75-63 in Atlantic 10 Conference play.

The Owls are ranked 24th in the country.


Wright State couldn’t rally from a 13-point deficit in the second half and dropped a Horizon League contest to the Crusaders, 58-56.

The Raiders went 0-2 on their 2-game trip through the state of Indiana.

Valpo goes to 19-7, 11-3. Wright State falls to 17-11, 10-6.

Xavier beats Temple by 11 in A-10 play

The Xavier Musketeers men’s basketball team has now won 35 straight Atlantic 10 Conference home victories, setting a new conference record with their win over Temple, 88-77.

The Temple Owls held the A-10 record for nearly 20 years, winning 34 in a row from 1987 to 1991.

Tu Holloway scored 21 points and Mark Lyons 19, leading the Musketeers to a 5-0 record in the A-10, 13-5 overall.

With the loss, Temple drops to 13-5 overall, 3-2.

Miami Hurricanes pick Temple coach Al Golden

According to published reports, former Temple head football coach Al Golden had his choice of staying in Pennsylvania to coach the University of Pittsburgh or head to south beach and take the Miami Hurricanes.

He chose the warm weather.

The 41-year-old Golden has had his name on a list of young coaches that have been sought by several schools for years. He replaces Randy Shannon who fell out of disfavor this year with a 7-5 record.

Golden has taken a once-downtrodden Temple program and led a five-year turnaround. The Owls have won 17 games the past two years.

Temple’s class of graduating seniors became the program’s first in almost 30 years to leave with a winning record.

Ohio Bobcats win at Temple; victory streak at seven

The Ohio University Bobcats have now won seven games in a row with their recent 31-23 victory at Temple.

Vince Davidson rushed for two touchdowns as the Bobcats held off a late Owls rally.

Ohio, from the Mid-American Conference has a record of 8-3, 6-1 in the league, moved one game closer to the Eastern Division championship. They can clinch by beating Kent State on November 26.


The Bobcats held a 21-point lead at 31-10, but Temple (8-3, 5-2 MAC East) scored very quickly. The Owls then recovered an onside kick and scored again. Both of the Temple touchdowns came on touchdown passes from Mike Girardi to Mike Campbell.

Ohio clinched the game for good when Travis Carrie recovered the second onside kick by Temple.
