COLUMBUS CITY LEAGUE: Improving South racks up 99-72 win over high-scoring West

Ramon Spears, head coach of Columbus South, has his Bulldogs in the thick of the South Division race with Africentric, Eastmoor Academy, Walnut Ridge and Marion-Franklin.

South went on the road Friday night and defeated the high-scoring West Cowboys, 99-72.

The key quarter was the second, as South had a 36-7 run.

South improves to 5-2, 2-2.

The Bulldogs were led by Oumar Diop with 25 points and Chris Byrd with 18.

West was led by Charles Holland with 27 and Ed Golden with 21.

The Columbus South Boys basketball team has been making progress all season long even if their record ended up at 7-15.

Head coach Ramon Spears, a former assistant at Africentric & Walnut Ridge, has brought winning ways from those programs and is instilling them into his.

The Bulldogs are a young and dangerous team as Division II top-seeded Jonathan Alder found out on Saturday night at Heath High School.

The final score was 46-43 with Alex Randall making the first of two foul shots with four seconds to go to seal the win.

South had a chance to tie at 46 but Aaron Mullins’ half-court shot hit the rim and fell off.

Oumar Diop. a Whitehall transfer led South with 13 points.

Alder, now 20-1, won the game at the free throw line going 18 of 25. Randall scored  12 points, Eric Roby added 12 and Nate Squires put in 11 points.

(Beechcroft Cougars)

The Beechcroft Cougars traveled to Linden-McKinley and walked away with a 64-51 win.

Khaleed Franklin led the way with 30 points for the Cougars.

The Panthers were led by Patrick Ngene-Igwe with 15 and Dwight Edwards with 14 points.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Hali Robinson’s Brookhaven Bearcats continue to win games.

On Tuesday, they traveled to Centennial and won easily, 75-53.

The key to the game was that the Bearcats shut down the Stars with 11 points in the third quarter and 8 in the fourth quarter.

Randall Clarkson led Brookhaven with 26 points followed by 22 from Khalid King.

The Stars were led by Eric Cofer-Wilson with 13 points.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Independence 76ers

The Independence 76ers followed up a nice win at Columbus South on Friday night with an impressive win at Columbus West on Tuesday night, 90-68.

The West Cowboys remains winless on the season at 0-19, 0-13.

The 76ers put four players in double figures scoring: Dominic Ward with 22, Chris Johnson with 18, Terry Hopewell with 16 and Malik Breckenridge with 12.

 

 

 

 

Eastmoor Academy Warriors

Eastmoor Academy took control of the game from the beginning of the game as they led 13-4 at the end of the first quarter and 26-15 at the half en route to an easy 65-35 win over Columbus South.

Bryan Booker led the way for the Warriors with 16 and John Draper scored 13.

South was led my Oumar Diop with 18.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: City League Boys Basketball Scoreboard

In a game heard on HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE, Brookhaven continues to play well, as they beat Beechcroft, 94-73. Khalid King scored a career-high 31 points. The Buckeye Muffler & Brake Shop Player of the Game was Randall Clarkson with 15 points.

Beechcroft was led by their number-1 scorer Khaleed Franklin who had 26 points.

The Centennial Stars visited Whetstone on Tuesday night and took control in the first quarter at 22-8 and at halftime, 40-20 and rolled to a 74-60 win over the Braves.

Jeremy Browning led the way with a 19-point game, followed by Keenan Smith with 18.

Whetstone was led by Claude Bogan with 18 points.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Gene Caslin’s Mifflin Punchers started out quick against the East Tigers with a 19-6 first quarter and a 35-12 halftime advantage en route to a comfortable 63-43 win.

Mifflin was led by J Murrell with 17.

East was led by Torre’ Smith with 21 points.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Michael Bates and the Africentric Nubians continued their fine season with a 91-66 win over the winless West Cowboys on the road.

The Nubians are 14-2 overall, 10-1 in the City South Divisiom.

The first quarter was tight as Africentric led just 27-21. They pushed ahead with breathing room at halftime with a lead of 49-33 and stayed in control the rest of the way.

The Nubians put three players in double figures: Fuquan Tucker led the way with 20, Kenny Robinson had 16 and Hosie Smith added 14.

West, who is having a horrible season at 0-17, 0-11, but has a young team, was led by Dasean Johnson with 13 points and Quantrell Huff scored 12.

 

 

 

The Independence 76ers are improving as the season moves along.

They won their fourth game on Tuesday, edging out visiting Briggs, 63-61 in a South Division game.

The game was tight through as Briggs led 19-14 at the end of the opening quarter; 38-30 at the half.

But the 76ers fought their way back into the game at the end of three quarters at 52-50 and in the fourth quarter, took control of the game with a 13-9 advantage.

The Bruins were led by Dewey Rice with 15 points and Charles Westbrook with 10.

The 76ers are 4-12, 4-8. Briggs is now at .500 at 8-8, 5-6.

 

 

 

 

Scott Williams’ Marion-Franklin Red Devils was just too much for the South Bulldogs, winning 72-39.

With home win, the Red Devils are 8-7, 7-4 in the South Division.

Marion-Franklin took control in the first quarter at 16-7 and 38-17 at the half and from there it was just a matter of what the final score would be.

Dresean Mathis led the winners with 17 points, Marquiez Lawrence scored 15 and Tony Anderson added 12.

South, who is coached former Walnut Ridge assistant Ramon Spears, drops to 5-10 overall, 1-10 in the South.

The Bulldogs received 11 points from Aaron Mullins and 9 from Oumar Diop.

Last season, the Columbus South Bulldogs were one of the City League’s worst teams, but had several close games that could’ve gone in their favor.

This year their much-improved and almost pulled off an upset of perennial South Division contender Walnut Ridge on Tuesday night.

With 2.5 seconds left, Roy Alexander canned two free throws to give Scots a 52-50 win over South.

Alexander led Walnut Ridge with 15 points.

The Scots led at the half, 31-20.

South, which could not get off a final shot before the buzzer, was led by Aaron Mullins and Oumar Diop with 11 points.
