The NBA has announced that Michael Carter-Williams is the 2013-2014 Rookie of the Year.

The Philadelphia 76ers point guard beat out Orlando Magic guard Victor Oladipo and former Columbus Northland High School star and Utah Jazz point guard Trey Burke, who finished second and third respectively.

The 22-year-old Carter-Williams, formerly of Syracuse University, is 6’6, 185 pounds.

He became only the third player since 1950-51 to lead all NBA rookies in scoring at 16.7, rebounds 6.3 and assists 6.2 joining Oscar Robertson (1960-61) and Alvan Adams (1975-76).

On December 3, 2013, he recorded his first triple-double with 27 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists in 47 minutes in a 126-125 double overtime victory over the Orlando Magic.

The Cleveland Cavaliers rallied behind the play of Alonzo Gee and Tristan Thompson to beat the Orlando Magic on Sunday night, 91-85.

Gee scored 19 points to lead the host Cavaliers in a fourth quarter rally that overcame the Magic.

Thompson scored 15 points and pulled down 16 rebounds.

Cleveland, who ended a season-high 10-game losing streak on Friday at Boston, has now won two games in a row for the first time since February 26-27.

The Cavs trailed by seven points in the third quarter and took the lead for good early in the fourth and made clutch play after clutch play down the stretch.

Vaughn introduced as new head coach of Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic introduced first-time head coach Jacque Vaughn as the 10th in their history.

Vaughn knows that he might not have star center Dwight Howard to lead the players on the court.

The 37-year-old Vaughn is a former NBA player from 1997-2009 with Utah, Atlanta twice, Orlando, the New Jersey Nets and San Antonio.

He was a first-round pick out of Kansas in 1997 by the Jazz.

Vaughn won an NBA championship with the Spurs in 2007.

Orlando’s Howard breaks Chamberlain’s 50-year-old FT record

Wilt Chamberlain is best known for his 100-point game against the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962.

But he also had another record that was not as well known but was a 50-year-old regular-season record. The 7’1 giant set a record on February 22, 1962 with 34 free throw attempts as a member of the Philadelphia Warriors.

Last week, Orlando Magic star Dwight Howard shot 39 free throws in his team’s 117-109 win over the Golden State Warriors.

Prior to the game, Howard was the worst free-throw shooter in the NBA at 42.6%, so the Warriors thought they’d foul him in the post and make him score at the free-throw line.

The 26-year-old Howard took advantage of the situation, making 21 of 39 attempts and finished with 45 points and 23 rebounds.

It was the first time an NBA player scored at least 40 points and at least 23 rebounds since March 1, 2003 when the Lakers’ Shaquille O’Neal put in 48 points and yanked down 20 boards.

The Orlando Magic won its fourth straight game by breaking open a close game in the fourth quarter with top scorer Dwight Howard on the bench. Howard went out of the game with his fourth foul late in the third quarter and didn’t play in the fourth quarter as the Magic beat Cleveland, 110-95.

Two recent acquisitions led the way as Gilbert Arenas scored 22 points and Jason Richardson added 20 as the Magic canned a season-high 19 three-point goals.

The Cavaliers lost for the 14th time in 15 games and are 1-13 in a miserable December. The 19 three-pointers are a season-high against them.

Orlando attempted 31 three-point shots and had six players in double figures scoring.

Antawn Jamison led Cleveland with 21 points and Daniel Gibson who fouled out in the fourth quarter, had 15.

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS GAME NOTES

* Cleveland signed swingman Alonzo Gee. The 6’6 Gee has played for San Antonio and Washington this season. He averaged 2.1 points and 1.6 rebounds in just under 10 minutes per game.
