Browns put heat on McCoy by drafting QB Weeden with 22nd overall pick in draft

To most NFL teams looking to draft a quarterback, Oklahoma State QB Brandon Weeden looked too old at 28 to use a first round pick on.

To the Cleveland Browns, he looked to good to pass up at the number-22 overall pick.

After all Weeden has some eye-popping stats: 13 games in 2011, 408 completions in 564 attempts, for 4,727 yards, 37 TD’s, 13 Interceptions, a 72.7 completion percentage, a 159.78 passer’s rating, 43.4 passing attempts per game and 363.6 yards passing per game.

The former minor league pitcher will give a good challenge for the starting position with Colt McCoy, who has struggled in his first two years at quarterback as the starter. But to be fair, McCoy did not have but two play-makers around him, departed RB Peyton Hillis and WR Joshua Cribbs. So how can he really be evaluated?

Weeden has a more superior arm than McCoy. His arm can put pressure on defenses through the air if the Browns receivers can catch the football which they are prone to drop quite frequently.

The 2012 Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas has been won by the Arkansas over Kansas State, 29-16.

Joe Adams had his fourth punt return for a touchdown in the 2011 season as the #7 Razorbacks matched a school-record for wins with 11 by defeating the #11 Wildcats.

The other Arkansas team’s who have won 11 games in a season, is the 1964 and 1977 editions.

Adams’ 51-yard return early in the second quarter gave Arkansas (11-2) a 10-0 advantage.

Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson threw two touchdown passes.

Kansas State, who finishes the season at 10-3, scored 16 points in a row to close to within 19-16.

Wildcats quarterback Collin Klein tied the Big 12 record with his 27th rushing touchdown of the season and matched the Football Bowl Subdivision record for a quarterback.

GAME NOTES:

*Although the two schools are less than 400 miles apart, they have played only four times, with the last meeting in 1967. Kansas State leads the series 3-2.

* The Razorbacks only losses were to LSU and Alabama, the national title contenders.

* The Wildcats losses were to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

* Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson led the SEC in passing for more than 285 yards a game.

* Arkansas WR Jarius Wright had 1,029 yards receiving on 63 receptions and 11 touchdowns. All of his stats are single-season school records. He produced all of those stats in 11 games and sat our one game with an injury. He led the SEC with 6 catches and 94 yards a game.

* Kansas State QB Collin Klein is very good. He accounted for 66% of the plays that the Wildcats and 69% of the team’s total offense. The 6’5, 226-pound junior rushed for 1,099 yards this season.

PINSTRIPE BOWL preview: Iowa State, Rutgers play at Yankee Stadium today at 3:20 pm ET on ESPN

The new Yankee Stadium will be the scene of the 2011 version of the Pinstripe Bowl which has Iowa State (6-6) against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (8-4).

The Pinstripe Bowl is nothing new to Rutgers. They beat Army last year and returns after losing its chance of a BCS game and a share of the Big East title after losing to Connecticut in the season finale.

Iowa State is a dangerous team who can score points. The Cyclones scored 44 on Iowa, 41  at Texas Tech and 37 against Oklahoma State.

The Scarlet Knights have won four straight bowl games and are led by WR Mohamed Sanu, who at 6’2, 215-pounds set a new Big East record for receptions in a season with 109 for 1,144 yards and seven touchdowns.

Meyer names Tom Herman as offensive coordinator/QB’s coach

Tom Herman (photo courtesy of OSU athletics)

Tom Herman, the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Iowa State University the past three years, and before that the same position for record-setting offenses at Rice University, has been named offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ohio State by new head coach Urban Meyer.

Herman’s 2011 Iowa State offense, which he will coach on December 30 in the Pinstripe Bowl against Rutgers at Yankee Stadium, averages 181.2 rushing yards and 211.7 passing yards per game. The Cyclones put up 44 points in a triple-overtime win over Iowa and accumulated 37 in a double-overtime upset of then-undefeated and then-#2 Oklahoma State.

“To work with and for Coach Meyer is an exciting opportunity for me,” Herman said. “i am really looking forward to working with him and learning his offensive systems. And to be able to coach with him at The Ohio State University is simply a dream come true.”

Herman was born in Cincinnati and still has family there, although he was raised in Simi Valley, California. He played collegiately at California Lutheran, graduating in 1997 with a degree in business administration. He earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Texas.

Herman has 11 years of experience as a college coach, including seven seasons as an offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, and 13 when his two seasons, 1999-2000, as a graduate assistant at Texas are included. He coached four years at Sam Houston State (2001-04), serving as receivers coach and special teams coordinator. He also spent two years at Texas State (2005-06) and two years at Rice (2007-08) as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

While his Texas State offenses led the Southland Conference in total offense each season, his stint at Rice was really notable. His offenses broke over 40 school records and in his second season the Owls won 10 games and went to a bowl for the first time since 1954.

Furthermore, Rice ranked in the Top 10 nationally in 2008 in passing offense (5th; 327.8), scoring offense (T8th; 41.6) and total offense (10th; 472.3). Two Rice receivers had more than 1,300 yards receiving that year, tight end James Casey had 111 catches and quarterback Chase Clement was the Conference USA MVP.

Herman and his wife, Michelle, have a daughter, Priya, and a son, Maddock.

Southern Mississippi coach Fedora heading to North Carolina

Larry Fedora (courtesy of Southern Mississippi athletics)

Don’t tell Southern Mississippi head football coach that the North Carolina football program has made NCAA violations and is facing sanctions in the near future. He is excited about joining the ACC.

The Golden Eagles head man has accepted the same position from the Chapel Hill school.

The Tar Heels, like Ohio State and Miami of Florida, have had a 2011 season rift with scandals, bad press and bad losses, fired Butch Davis right before the season started due to the NCAA investigation into improper benefits and academic misconduct. Defensive coordinator Everett Withers did a decent job leading the team to a 7-5 record.

Before coaching Southern Miss, Fedora was the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State and Florida.

Fedora has guided the 22nd-ranked Golden Eagles to an 11-2 record; a record for wins, including an upset of previously unbeaten Houston in the Conference USA title game.

His record in four seasons is at 33-19.
