TCU surprises #5 Kansas; 2 losses in a row rare for Jayhawks

The Kansas Jayhawks lost two games in a row and in the same week. That is a rarity.

Last weekend, the Jayhawks lost to Oklahoma State.

Their latest loss was to lowly TCU, 62-55 on Wednesday night.

This is the first losing streak in more than seven years. Kansas had played 264 games in a row since January 2006 without consecutive losses, which is the longest active streak in NCAA Division I Basketball.

TCU never trailed in the game and were led by Garlon Green with 20 points.

The Horned Frogs improved to 10-12, 1-8 in the Big 12, while Kansas slips to 19-3, 7-2.

Rookie QB Weeden debuts in Browns 19-17 win over Detroit

Cleveland Browns rookie QB Brandon Weeden had quite a few obstacles in his way in his NFL debut at Ford Field in Detroit.

He was without fellow rookie, RB Trent Richardson and TE Ben Watson and he lost WR Mohamed Massaquoi after the first play of the game.

But the 28-year-old from Oklahoma State hung in despite being shaky.

In three series against of action against a very aggressive Lions defense Friday night, Weeden completed 3 of 9 passes for 62 yards, with one lost fumble, one interception and a dismal 19.0 quarterback rating in the Browns 19-17 win.

Weeden started the game off on a very high note, completing a 12-yard pass to Massaquoi and a 34-yarder down the deep left sidelined to rookie Travis Benjamin.

The other quarterbacks did well in relief of Weeden.

Colt McCoy was 6 of 8 for 88 yards. Seneca Wallace threw a third quarter touchdown to rookie Brad Smelley to cut the Lions lead down to 14-12. Then Thad Lewis led the fourth quarter charge with Adonis Thomas scoring from 3 yards out.

The Browns won the game on a 45-yard field goal by Jeff Wolfert’s 45-yarder with 28 seconds left in the game.

Browns to stay with QB’s Weedan, McCoy & Wallace for awhile

The Cleveland Browns have no intention of moving any of their quarterbacks from a year ago, Colt McCoy or Seneca Wallace, according to team president Mike Holmgren.

It has been obvious since the drafting of former Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden, that the team favors him but are not saying so publicly.

The two quarterbacks from 2011, or at least one of them are expected to be the backup to the rookie.

Holmgren did say that it could be possible to keep all three quarterbacks due to the injury factor.

Fowler falls out of contention with 84 in final round of Memorial

Usually if a golfer has a bad round of golf, he will not spend time with the media or the gallery of fans.

But fan-favorite Rickie Fowler showed his professionalism by spending time with the media and spent 30 minutes signing autographs for the fans. Nobody would’ve blamed the former Oklahoma State product if he wanted to go to the clubhouse and hide out after a disappointing Sunday at the Memorial.

Fowler was 3rd after Saturday’s third round, three shots from the lead held by Spencer Levin.

But on Sunday, he fell faster than Haley’s Comet in the final round, shooting a whopping 12-over-par 84 to drop from third place at 5-under-par to a tie for 52nd place with three other golfers at 7-over par. That 84 matched the fourth-highest final round in the 37 years of the Memorial’s history. The highest was back in 1981 by Gary Hallberg with an 88.

Fowler shot a 40 on the front nine and a 44 on the back nine.

His troubles started early in the round at number-2 where he pulled a drive and on number-3 where he missed a three-putt from 5 1/2 feet missed.

The collapse would indicate fatigue, but Fowler said “no”.

His collapse was really stunning considering that he has been one of the hottest and most consistent PGA Tour golfers the past two months, winning once and finishing in the top ten in four tournaments.

The 84 is Fowler’s highest score on the PGA Tour. His previous high score was a 79 in the final round of the Northern Trust Open earlier this season.

After 67 PGA Tour starts, colorful Fowler finally a winner

When 23-year-old Rickie Fowler came on the PGA Tour three years ago out of Oklahoma State, he was anointed as the next American golfing star. He had a lot of flashiness by wearing different color outfits especially all-orange on Sundays.

He came close to winning several times but to no avail.

66 golf tournaments had passed and no wins.

But 67 became the magic number for the former Cowboys golf star.

On Sunday, Fowler picked up the elusive PGA Tour win by defeating Rory McIlroy, another of those young golfing stars.

Fowler sank a clutch shot in a sudden-death playoff at Quail Hollow, to win the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina.

His clutch putt, from 4-feet to birdie the 18th hole to beat McIlroy and D.A. Points. He shot a 3-under-par 69.
